The MEXiCAN — Restaurant in Yamba

Food and service upon arrival are great by most staff. Unfortunately the booking system itself where they will not take a phone call, rather a text or fb message does not deserve the 3 given stars from me. After sending a text and waiting overnight I received no reply. I then reached out on Facebook the following day for that evenings possible booking and mentioned my text message and what I was after. The communication was minimal and not what I would call polite. Very direct and I had to confirm again that it was actually locked in. Upon arrival we were met by a wait staff who I can only assume was the one who had handled the booking. She seated us but was quick to return and state that she had two bookings under my name in a not very polite way. I was quick to inform her that it was probably because we texted and had no response so I tried Facebook. I also mentioned to her that in my Facebook message I had communicated that I’d texted too. She continued to provide reasons such as we don’t check messages until 3:30 and yesterday was a public holiday. At the end of the day, her questioning of me wasn’t appropriate. The double booking was based on their poor choice of booking system and an apology without excuses and attitude would have washed...

So so disappointed to see this place deteriorate to this level. We've been coming here since it was Sol Cantina and tonight will be the last time, after the last couple experiences of 'forgetting orders', we won't be making excuses for it anymore.

We made a booking months ago only to be told on arrival that bookings aren't allowed this time of year. The owner did ever so condescendingly let us know he would honor the booking, thanks, or so we thought.

Restaurant was half full yet after waiting 1.5 hours for an entree and mains we were informed (after asking) that 'it got lost in the machine' and would be minutes away. 10 minutes later 4 out of 5 meals turned up, the last was once again forgotten until we had to ask again.

The 'Taco bowl' I had was generous with tasty prawns but lacking on the salad side and was mostly filled with grated cheese.

The now drunk owner (it was New Years Eve but maybe take the night off mate) did offer tequila shots to make up for for the error but just seemed offended when we declined. They did however comp one Margarita jug.

Seriously, up your game 'The Mexican', we won't be referring friends or coming here anymore with this kind of "how dare you expect 'service' at my...

Stayed in Yamba for a weekend away and was delighted to find this gem. We love Mexican food and have visited many restaurants. The difference with this place - the food is super fresh. You can actually taste the difference. The owner is passionate about his business and went out of his way to explain the specials and some details on how he gets his produce - some of it proudly grown by himself. If our stomachs had been bigger we would have gotten their Vegans Nightmare special, but knowing we wouldn't finish it, opted for smaller and lighter meals. I had the Fish Taco special - 3 fresh soft tacos with the best perch I've ever tasted. The salad was super fresh, not overdressed with oily dressings. This was a delight to eat. The young waitresses and bar tender were pleasant and full of life - it's nice to see people happy to work. Thanks for a great feed. We'll be back next...
