We walked into Bäckerei Öfferl with high expectations—friends had praised the quality, and to be fair, the bread and pastries are excellent. On our first visit, the staff were warm and friendly. The second time, not at all.
Later, friends familiar with the bakery shared troubling reports: that staff have been fired simply for being unwell, and that tips meant for employees are allegedly kept by the business. If true, these are deeply unethical practices.
We find it upsetting to pay a €32 premium for breakfast bread items, thinking we’re supporting a high-quality bakery, only to learn that the business may be profiting while mistreating its staff. That’s unacceptable.
We won’t return to Bäckerei Öfferl, and we encourage others to reconsider too. Good bread doesn’t...

Read moreThis has been my favorite bakery in Vienna for the past two years. It’s a chain with a number of locations around the city. It starts with the amazing sourdough bread but the pastries are great as well. They have apricot and raspberry krapfen (jelly doughnuts). And the topfengolatsche is delicious. They also offer excellent organic milk and butter and, on occasion, raw milk. This is rare but great if you’re into making your own cheese like I do sometimes. Definitely worth heading...
