Perhaps to make up for it, she started the buffet early just for us and served my friends vegetable soup at no extra charge. Small gestures, but appreciated. The buffet, at 20 euros, was worth it. Each dish carried the flavors I love—savory, umami, brothy sweetness, and even bitterness. Yes, I embrace bitterness, as an Asian.
