Why 1 star??..read on.... What worked was the ambience...a low terrace one level above the closed marketplace on a summer evening. Service was not efficient, maybe the staff...two young people...both probably new or inexperienced...they seemed uncomfortable and confused. As for the food ...what do i say??!! Either I am totally out of sync with the current definition of a meal, OR i had unknowingly gone to a special needs diet centre ... OR more likely... the food was objectively 'not good'. Arriving a little late, i checked out four already delivered dishes that my friends had ordered. All visually unappealing, all dull and grey. Not liking the appearance of any of those items, I ordered a Buddha bowl expecting some bright fresh greens. The menu said gurken and zucchini nudeln, quinoa, baby spinach, brocoli, chimichuri. I expected lightly sauteed vegetables with some flavoring. What came was a bowl of uncooked, unflavored, not even salt and pepper, not-fresh vegetable ingredients including strips of raw zucchini, along with sliced avocado, mashed avocado and a heap of chia seeds. If there was chimichuri i didnt find it.... It probably gave up and decided to go on a hike. I tried to eat but can't go on munching unseasoned raw tired and wilted spinach and raw zucchini strips for long without any vinaigrette. My drink, mimosa was ok. But I was so hungry after that 'dinner', I had to go home and eat real food! What got me thinking was how we as a society have accepted that spending 10-15 euros on raw ingredients stuffed in a bowl is fine. We made it okay to waste money on hardly edible food and not complain, to not be the negative, whiney, killjoy member of the group who's spoiling the vibe. I had gone there to enjoy a celebratory dinner, willing to spend money on a special night...and instead I went home hungry. When eating out, the least expectation is decent edible food. That didn't happen here. This should not be okay. And the place was dark and dim most of that evening because they didn't put on the light. Some other table had candles. When we asked for candles too, we were the other people brought their...
Read moreTangled? Confused? Chaotic? "Wirr" means many things in German. Today we discovered that "aggression" (bordering on assault) can be added to the list.
It wasn't our first time at Wirr on Yppenplatz. We already knew the service was slow and the drinks overpriced. Still, the restaurant is situated on a nice corner, catching late sunshine on a spring evening.
We took the 45-minute wait for our cold-appetizer in stride. The waitress was new and apologized for the delay. It might even have worked out after the aforementioned waitress spilled the drinks over the table and onto our laps before we could take a sip. She apologized again and offered to complement a free beverage onto our tab.
It only began to become strange after we asked for the bill. A money changer emerged (not our waitress because ÂŻ(ă)/ÂŻ) who told us there would be no recompense for the spilled drinks. When we asked to speak with the manager in order to clarify the situation, we were told no such person was available. Mind you, we're talking about a dispute equivalent to about 10 euros on a 45 euro bill.
I informed the money changer that I was unhappy with the service, paid her in cash and said I'd take the matter up later. As my partner and I stood up to leave, another empty glass fell over, spilling ice on the table. We left shaking our heads, walking into the sunset.
Again, it might have ended here. But suddenly, with fewer than 20 paces separating us from from the restaurant, a young man with a blonde hair bun, raced after us screaming. Apparently from the kitchen, he began calling my 60-year-old partner unmentionable names and accused us of mistreating "his" staff. Yelling and mutual recrimination ensued. The situation escalated to the point where he physically grabbed at us, prompting nearby witnesses to scream "hör auf! (stop!).
Please take heed, dear readers. Our experience at Wirr suggests a reckless and dangerous culture of impunity. We will not eat or drink there again. We are still shaken by the experience. The sun shines elsewhere...
