QualityLast summer, I was given the opportunity to visit India, my native country. Even though I was born in India, I was not able to explore the countryās rich history. I visited many historic sites, including some of the most famous buildings in the world, The Taj Mahal. I also visited other monuments while on my visit. I have learned a lot about the history of India, which is full of different cultures. Throughout my visit to India, I came to realization that these places hold a tremendous amount of historical background and the fact that they are still standing is remarkable. When I went to Taj Mahal, I was surprised by the immense size of the structure itself. In the pictures, it looks smaller than it does in person. The Red Fort got its name from the color of its walls, which consist of red sandstone. It has been the symbol of power ever since it was built. Every year, on independence day, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag in front of the Red Fort, and gives a nationally broadcasted speech. When I went to visit the Fort, I was immediately blown away away by the beauty of the Fort. It stands alone in an area with no high-rise buildings, which makes it stands out. Further, the guide told us that the fort was designed by the same person who designed the Taj Mahal. For those who do not know, birianis are of two kind, one where the process of cooking biriani starts with semi cooked rice & semi or fully cooked meat. & the other one where the biriani is cooked with semi cooked rice & raw marinated goat meat. the Latter is called kachchi biriani. Most popular birianis you find in Kolkata are not kachchi biriani. The biriani served in Kolkata kachchi ghor is a traditional old town Kachchi with a good amount of heat which is unque to kachchi cooked in traditional old town manner. They seve a generous portion of meat with a heaping quantity of rice ( I normally can't finish half of the rice & I am a pretty big eater) with the quintessential piece of perfectly cooked Biriani potato. Don't we all hate when we feverishly bite into the big piece of potato with your biriani only to find the little piece of uncooked hard pat in the middle? well after years & uncountable servings later, I am yet to find one here.
They serve it with a packet of sauce called "tok" which is unique in this shop only. If you like kachchi & can spare the time to make the trip, please do go & try...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreKolkata Kacchi Ghor has been one of my favorite spots for a long time. I recently revisited it after a few years, mainly because it's located quite far from my home. Despite the distance, the visit was totally worth it.
They serve authentic Kacchi Biriyani that's different from the usual ā made with less oil and fewer spices, which gives it a unique and lighter taste. The biriyani was absolutely delicious, with tender, well-cooked meat and rich, flavorful rice. It reminded me of the kind of biriyani we often enjoy at Desi wedding programs. They also serve a side of chutney, which adds an extra burst of flavor. I also tried their Badam Sharbat. It was just okay ā nothing extraordinary, but still a decent choice to cool off with. If youāre a biriyani lover, Iād highly recommend trying Kolkata Kacchi Ghor at least once. Iād rate their biriyani a solid 9/10 and the Badam Sharbat around 7/10. The shop is very old and small seating arrangement but recently they add air conditioner which is pretty good touch. It's not a fancy restaurant but the food is great.
Location Tip: The shop is located in Old Town, Shatrowja. Thereās no designated parking space nearby, so itās best to park near the Old Jail Gate and either walk or take a rickshaw to reach...
