Hosheni Dalan, the historic Imambara located in Bakshibazar, Old Dhaka, is a fascinating site that holds both religious and architectural significance. My visit on 23 June 2025 offered a peaceful and meaningful experience, right in the middle of one of Dhaka’s most densely populated areas. From the outside, the Imambara stands out modestly yet impressively. The façade is traditional—painted in simple tones, with arched doorways and decorative motifs that reflect Mughal influence. While not lavish or flashy, its clean symmetry and cultural detailing give it a quiet dignity. The structure is set back slightly from the road, surrounded by old-style buildings and the everyday buzz of Bakshibazar. Despite the crowded surroundings, the Imambara maintains a distinct, almost sacred presence, separated by a boundary wall and a modest entrance gate. Inside, the contrast is striking. A calm and solemn environment welcomes you. The main prayer hall is spacious, clean, and respectfully arranged. Religious items, symbolic banners, and historical elements are well-maintained, and the caretakers were kind enough to share insights into the Imambara’s historical and spiritual significance. What I appreciated most was the peacefulness of the place amidst the surrounding noise of Old Dhaka. It serves not only as a religious center for the Shia community but also as a symbol of resilience and heritage in the heart of the city. In short, Hosheni Dalan is a place worth visiting—not just for its religious value but also as a quiet reminder of Dhaka’s layered and diverse history.

Hussaini Dalan, an Imambara in Dhaka, was built in 1642 by Mir Murad, a Mughal official, as the residence of the Shia community's imam. Patronized by Prince Shah Shuja, son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and subedar of Dhaka, it has undergone several repairs, especially after the 1897 earthquake. The site, known for its distinctive architecture combining Islamic, Iranian, and British elements, resembles a Hindu rajbari (landowner's palace). It serves as the main venue for majlis during Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Hussain, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Featuring a pond in the south used for ritual ablutions and ceremonies, Hussaini Dalan is both a popular tourist attraction and a cultural heritage site in Dhaka.

Hussaini Dalan is a famous and beautiful place in Bakshibazar, Old Dhaka. It is cost free no tickets is needed for entry. It was built a long time ago during the Mughal period by Prince Shah Shuja. This place is very important for Shia Muslims, especially during Muharram and Ashura. The building looks amazing, with nice old-style design and a peaceful courtyard. Every year many people come here to remember Imam Hussain (AS). It’s not only a religious place but also an important part of Dhaka’s history and culture. A great place to visit and learn about the city’s past.

The historic graves at Hussaini Dalan in Old Dhaka often go unnoticed, but they hold great significance. Hussaini Dalan is not only a Shiite center but also a landmark in Dhaka that has a rich history spanning many centuries. While it is known for its religious programs, especially during Muharram and Ashura, it is also an exceptional heritage site in Dhaka.

As an imambara, Hussaini Dalan evokes a spiritual connection with its visitors. People can be seen worshipping and even crying, creating a solemn atmosphere. Among the notable sights are the 'tazia Mubarak', which are intricate and decorative miniature grave-like structures that commemorate Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain. Black flags and swords can also be seen, serving as reminders of the mourning and martyrdom at Karbala. These artifacts and elements contribute to the imambara's purpose as a place of mourning and remembrance. Apart from the spiritual side, the environment & beauty of this place also...
