Was looking for a Thai food place and found this one on TripAdvisor. Read the remarks of placing reservations weeks in advance but decided to take my chances and went there. Easy to reach from Antwerp Central station by tram/underground and a short 5 minute walk. Certainly helped having read about the mysterious door or else I would never ever have found it. The address on TripAdvisor is wrong by the way. It's one house more to the left. It's really an ordinary house from the outside with no clue whatsoever that there's a restaurant inside. Only a little white taped off doorbell showing Sombat. Again no mention of the word restaurant. Buzz the bell and the owner will come to open the door for you. It's really a cozy small living room with 5 tables inside. The atmosphere is super special. The owners are incredibly friendly. As others said there's no menu, only a set 5 course of the day including welcome cocktail. Note that after the desert you'll be asked for coffee or tea as if it's included in the package. It's not. You pay 3 euro extra for a large pot of tea with some lovely sweet cookies. All tables are served a new course at pretty much the same time. Allow for at least three hours to get through the full meal. I'm a big eater but this food really got me full. The quality of the food was good but not super and certainly not reaching authentic Thai food as one can experience in Thailand. The whole unique experience certainly makes it worth it though. I paid 66 euros for just myself for the menu plus two Thai beers and the pot of tea. To me that's really steep. Bit too much to be honest. There's free good WiFi. Ask the owner for the password. The garden looks lovely. Prefect restaurant for a special occasion or romantic date. Especially during the weekends be sure to book way in advance. During the week you may get lucky by just showing up at the door. Cash payments are accepted including even American Express cards. If you're in for something unique and different, got some money to spend and are not looking for the best ever Thai food taste, this is...
Read moreWe enjoyed the atmosphere - the feeling of being in a mansion, fresh flowers, a burning fire. The service was also great: friendly, English spoken, a good pace between courses. I found the food lacking. Given that you can’t choose at all, and based on the price point (we paid €140 for two meals, water, 1 glass of wine, tea and coffee), I expected much more. Quantity was definitely there, more than. But the food was over-salted and not interesting. I’ve never been to Thailand so I can’t judge the authenticity. But I had some really good Thai food when I lived in the US and it was several cuts above this, even from simple neighborhood restaurants. Our dinner took 3 hours. (Not an issue, just be aware and budget the time.) In the summer, I imagine the yard being lovely. This place has been on my list for years, so I don’t regret going, but I also don’t think we...
Read moreSombat Thai is an upscale fusion Thai restaurant. Reservering is advised because seating is limited. The place is easy to find, the address is on their site and TripAdvisor. It's not -really- visible from the outside, but inside it harbours a very cozy Eurasian-vibed livingroom. The menu is decided by the proprietor, and varies from season to season. Service quick and attentive, but not stuck-up. I highly recommend coming here. The food might not be the most exquisite or meticulously choreographed, but the atmosphere and care completes...
