The Butcher's Son — Restaurant in Antwerp

Hard to say but: I (we) expected more. Me and my girlfriend left quite disappointed today after visiting this restaurant. I’ll give it a shot to put it into words. First of all: no comment at all on the food which was all delicious. Why only 3 stars then you ask? I love my wines so I studied the wine menu before we went. We asked for the wine menu and I explained to the waiter that we ordered hare as a main dish and that we like powerful classic Italian wines like Barolo, Amarone, … but that I noticed they have a lot of new world wines on the menu and I asked him to suggest something keeping these things in mind. He Said he would and took the wine menu and disappeared. 10 minutes later we went for a cigarette and when we came back in he came to our table with an already opened bottle of wine, said “this is a great belgian wine” and let me taste it. It might be my fault but I felt like I couldn’t say no anymore. To be clear: there was nothing wrong with the wine and for being a Belgian wine it actually surprised me but in my opinion this is not ok. This is definitely not my first high end restaurant but usually the sommelier would come to your table with 2/3 wines, tell a story about it and mention the price and still say “I think this matches best your taste the way you described it” and then let you decide. I felt like I had no way back now. Again, the wine didn’t match our taste profile at all. In the end I ordered an additional bottle for our main dish and this one - after giving mich more input - matched our taste profile. This shouldn’t be the way, as a sommelier you have one task. This is the first time ever this happened to me. Aside from that: when they served the main dish they didn’t explain what was on it. Again something I think is fair to expect when visting a high end restaurant? The setting in general I also don’t recommend for couples. It’s a great place to go for business lunches and business dinners but would’t recommend to go with your partner. When visiting a restaurant with in general a good reputation in Antwerp AND most importantly A MICHELIN STAR I think it’s fair to expect a bit more than described above. Correct me if I’m wrong. It’s sad to say but I know a lot of restaurants without any micheline star that deserve the michelin star a lot more than Butchers son…

To end on a positive note: The hare itself was amazing. Fully lived up to what you expect from a restaurant from the number 1...

Afgelopen week bracht ik samen met mijn vrouw en onze twee kinderen een bezoek aan dit restaurant. Het was de derde keer dat ik hier kwam, maar na deze ervaring zal ik zeker nooit meer terugkeren. Deze ervaring was ver onder de maat en zeker niet wat men zou verwachten van een sterrenrestaurant.

Tijdens het serveren van het aperitief werd mijn vrouw onverwachts bedolven onder een glas champagne. Fouten kunnen gebeuren, uiteraard... Maar tot onze verbazing stond de maître/eigenaar erbij en keek ernaar zonder enige actie te ondernemen. In plaats van excuses aan te bieden of de situatie op te lossen, werd de schuld volledig afgeschoven op een 'stagiaire'. Terwijl mijn vrouw zich noodgedwongen moest behelpen met een (vuile!) handdoek die achter de toog werd gepakt en naar het toilet ging om zich een beetje toonbaar te maken, kreeg de rest van het gezelschap alvast de menukaart 'om al eens te kijken voor straks'.

Tot onze verbijstering werd het omgevallen glas simpelweg weer gevuld en terug op tafel gezet, alsof er niets was gebeurd. Een andere aperitief, waar minstens een kwart van was gemorst, werd zonder enige aarzeling geserveerd alsof er niets aan de hand was. De vloer, tafel en stoel waar mijn vrouw opzat, werden met een servet van een andere tafel drooggemaakt en dat was het...

Omdat mijn vrouw volledig doorweekt was en het gevoel, als gevolg van het geheel amateuristische gedrag, niet van dien aard was om nog een gezellige avond te beleven, hebben wij besloten het diner te beëindigen. Na een tussenstop thuis voor een vestimentaire switch zijn we naar een ander restaurant gegaan. Hoewel dit restaurant geen sterren heeft en het al laat op de avond was, werden wij daar met open armen ontvangen en hebben wij genoten van een uitstekende service die wel sterrenwaardig was.

Als iemand die regelmatig restaurants bezoekt, heb ik dit nooit eerder meegemaakt of zien gebeuren. Ik hoop oprecht dat de heren eigenaars deze feedback ter harte nemen en er iets van leren – wat erg nodig is als de ambitie er nog is om een ster te behouden.

Tip: er bestaan goede cursussen situationeel management, een gave die duidelijk van nature niet...

We had a wonderful lunch. Given the large selection of excellent restaurants in Antwerp, we weren't sure what to expect, but we certainly are happy to have been here for lunch. It's a casual setting, offering a set menu and a la carte. We decided to go a la carte because a couple of dishes caught our eye.
