Brasserie De Vogelsanck — Restaurant in Hasselt

I've eaten here several times now, and it's quite a tranquil place within the city centre offering a fair range of meals and drinks at reasonable prices with good wifi.

The first time I visited I tried translating the Dutch menu until the waiter offered the English one. Be warned that there are minor differences: more options offered in the local version compared to fixed dishes in the English one, and the specials board isn't translated, so you'll need to check what else is on offer.

On this occasion I picked the "chicken goulash" which is a pile of chicken, peppers and onions cooked in a peppery tomato sauce, not really proper goulash (not like I've had in Hungary) but tasty, nonetheless. The Dutch menu provides it with potato croquettes and a side salad, but each time I've picked it off the English menu they specify only chips - but it's good enough.

On my second visit I tried their spare ribs, which seemed pre-boiled (rather than roasted) so the meat wasn't falling off the bone, very clingy with quite a gammon flavour. They were tasty... but not sure I'll have the same again.

I've returned several times for the goulash and beer, and had mixed service on all the occasions I've been there: sometimes I've been sat ignored for some time so approached the bar, paid up and left; other times the waiting staff are pretty attentive and not let my glass run dry. It does seem to vary from visit to visit - I'll use it as a "safe fallback" but don't feel it's my first choice of...
