Happy Garden — Restaurant in Ostend

One of the better Chinese food options in Ostend. I've visited China myself so I'm well aware how authentic Chinese food is supposed to taste. Happy garden offers a fusion between authentic Chinese dishes but clearly with a western influence. Nevertheless it's well executed and this restaurant will appeal to a broad audience, even those not familiar with Chinese food. I highly recommend the Suen Lak spicy-sour soup which is quite close to the taste I remember from China. And if you're in for a spectacular show dish: order one of the Tip-Pan dishes with a choice of meat or fish. Tip-Pan is served sizzling hot and smokey, straight from the oven and the presentation is part of the show. Other guests will surely glance to what you've ordered. If you're looking for a bargain deal: come here for lunch and for around 10 EUR you can have an appetizer and a choice of different main dishes. A perfect restaurant if you want affordable, quick, very tasty food. I rarely eat Chinese food if any, but I can say that whatever I ate at this place was excellent, with the added benefit of being affordable enough for a student like me. I have yet to know of another place where you can get a soup, entry, main dish and dessert for 20€.

As for the service, it may look a bit cold and "too quick", but it makes sense as there isn't that much personnel in the restaurant, so they have to be efficient. However, if you're in a rush like I was, this totally works in your advantage : the quick service allowed me to finish the whole meal in 40 minutes flat, all waiting time included. I had planned to read a book while waiting, but they didn't give me enough waiting time to finish a single page, that's how quick they are! Also the people are actually very nice, they are just under pressure so they have a "stern" look on their face.

Date 26th July 2024. Pathetic food...bland. asked them to take back the untouched mixed meat with vegetables to make it a bit spicy. They refused. Service of the lady horrible behavior. Avoid this place if you value your money and spend it elsewhere. Only good thing is the view...you can watch people stroll by. But if food is on your mind...go somewhere else.
