Restaurant was quite empty, and they had many staff on. We arrived 2.5 hrs before close. We were first brought an incorrect beverage, and had to push to explain the difference between a lager and a stout. It was confirmed the runner made a mistake. Our waitress came quite a bit later apologizing for the long wait to place the rest of our order. When our gyoza arrived as an appetizer it was pork. As a pescatarian it was very uncomfortable to have to eat what I had already bitten. Again the waitress pushed that it was was was indeed the shrimp gyoza we ordered. We insisted she send it back to the kitchen to have the chef cut one open. She later returned and said the chef made a mistake and they would send out a new order. The kitchen then proceeded to make and serve several other tables. They did not rush our incorrect appetizer order at all. Our meal arrived... before the appetizer. We saw the "Tropical California Roll" had the kiwis on top the waitress warned us would be substituted for avocado. We asked what the "Tropical fruit" part was (which was the reason it was $4 more than the "California Roll"). She said "kiwi"... which would have been on the California anyhow, as they didn't have avocado. If there isn't a difference between the 2 dishes- they shouldn't charge customers for the higher-priced Tropical one. Also, it's not crab, it's imitation crab roll. Did they comp us for any of the trouble and mistakes? No. They charged full price despite all of their mistakes. Was the sushi good? Yes, it was fantastic. However, I'm not sure it was worth the hassle of having to push to correct a runner, chef and...
Read moreUnfortunately we came on a bad night… only two servers, and they made sure to tell us before they sat us. But it was it not a busy night. They have about 5-6 white wines on the the menu, but when I tried to order Sauvignon blanc they told me they only had Rose and Pinot Grigio… with Sushi? No thanks! We are Hilton diamonds members so we were staying on the property, so we asked if I could bring my bottle of wine since they didn’t have a great selection to go with sushi. She said yes without telling us about the port fee, which we were charged. We ordered the gyoza for a starter which came raw and cold, replacement which came after the meal was still charged, this replacement gyoza was steam fried and the pan fried, the first one wasn’t pan fried… but they tried to gaslight us and said they spent extra time cooking it. Third strike was when the sushi rolls came out without the ramekins for soy sauce… the waitress said she would bring them. We understood they were busy, so about 5 min later, I sent my younger sister to help them out and bring them for us. They would not let her bring them out to us, they told her, they would bring them. Another 10min came without them bringing them, so I got up to ask for them which again they would not let me bring them out. We decided to go home and eat leftovers before adding more sushi rolls to this horrible service. Hope they aren’t part of the Curio/Hilton family. For quality of the sushi/sashimi… you are in Belize… don’t expect too much for sushi. I suggest go to Carambas in town, which we been going for the past two nights in a row. Great quality...
Read moreThis place touts itself as "where Japan meets Belize", so I expected excellent fresh fish, cut well, and bright delicious flavours. What I got was an excellent server, Stephanie, who told us lots of great things to do in the local area and made sure our food was allergen free, and shopping mall level sushi. The salmon is frozen. I understand that Belize isn't salmon breeding ground, but then why have it at all? Why not feature the fantastic local seafood like black snapper, stone crab, conch, black fin tuna, spiny lobster? Why is the crab fake crab? Make it truly where Japan meets Belize, because that's an excellent concept, but absolutely isn't true of the food served here. Both Japan and Belize are known for great seafood, with Japanese style food finding appearance very important. My sushi was served with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. The ginger was not great. The manager didn't seem like he cared about the issue, just telling me it's the owner's choice.
Very happy they took care of allergies and had options, but it wasn't great. The ramen was made with instant noodles, I couldn't taste the broth so I'm not sure about that. This place could be excellent mid or fine dining based on the location and style of food that should be served, but it fell very short. Any fish place in town has better fish.
I didn't take pictures bc it was so disappointing. The bill for Ramen, 3 rolls, edamame, a glass of wine, and 2 fanta was over 200bzd.
Take the trip in town, don't eat here. If you're looking for something at mahogany Bay, eat at the little shacks, much better,...
