I initially loved La Fonda de Nilo—so much so that my wife and I dined there multiple times and recommended it to others. Unfortunately, a terrible experience changed my view completely.
On March 7th, I ate the Picana steak, and within an hour, I became violently ill. I had to be hospitalized, paying $350 USD in medical bills, and I spent the next three days bedridden, unable to eat solid food. My wife and I shared everything except the steak, and she didn’t get sick—confirming that the steak was the issue.
When I reached out to the restaurant to warn them, I expected concern and accountability. Instead, the owner deflected blame, implying I must have eaten something else and dismissing a local business owner’s report of another recent case of food poisoning from the same restaurant. He also argued that the waitress wasn’t responsible for warning customers about food safety risks with undercooked meat.
After some back and forth, the owner finally agreed to refund my meal. At that point, I responded that, given the circumstances, the entire bill should be refunded—which I don’t think is unreasonable considering what happened. After that, he never responded again and never refunded anything.
To see if I was out of line, I asked another San Pedro restaurant owner how they would handle this situation. They told me that fully comping the meal and inviting me back on the house would have been the right thing to do. That’s what true customer service looks like—not deflection, blame-shifting, and silence.
This lack of responsibility and disregard for customer well-being is unacceptable. Food poisoning is serious, and the way this restaurant handles complaints raises major red flags. I urge others to be cautious before dining here. What started as a great experience turned into a nightmare, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go...

Read moreThey’re poorly equipped and amateur when it comes to cooking meat. I ordered a ribeye cooked medium-well and it came out tough and gray with no external crust. When I asked for a substitute (sausage) for the horribly prepared steak, I was gaslit and bombarded by another staff member. As a business; especially one in the food industry, you cannot get offended, upset or belligerent towards customers when they express their concerns because your service/product didn’t meet their request and/or preference. When I finally received the pork, it was intentionally undercooked and pink on the interior as retribution for me politely disliking their egregious steak. Additionally, the waitress was incredibly rude and unwelcoming since we were seated, she became visibly irritated anytime a member of my party asked for accommodations. Im not sure if it was motivated by racial/ethnic disparities or a result of xenophobia so I can’t form that conclusion however I wouldn’t be surprised, as we were all treated passive aggressively throughout the entire night starting at when we kindly asked her for separate checks. It seemed like a large, black, non-Belizean party entering burdened them, so I wonder if we’d be treated differently had those external factors fit their comfort zone. Ultimately, be informed that they serve undercooked pork, soggy steak, the service is terrible land you may be racially profiled prior to choosing this place! As for the the business, do better and be kinder to individuals who are supporting your establishment and who...
