Silver Wok Restaurant — Restaurant in Thimphu District

On our third day at Thimphu, we decided to try a Karaoke restaurant and turned up at Mojo Park - realized they do not allow outsiders to sing and walked out immediately. Nidup, our ever resourceful guide, called ahead and took us to Silver Oak restaurant. By now, Nidup knew our requirements and was becoming very adept at finding very good restaurants that is easy on the purse and awesome in everything else :) We opted for quite a few Chinese dishes - the 12YearOldBoy tried the hot and sour chicken soup - which according to him was one of the best he has ever tasted. We found the food here slightly more spicy than the other places we went to in Bhutan - could be also because of the very spicy chilli sauce that was given as an addition. Silver Wok used to be my go-to place, but things have really changed for the worse. I recently ordered the bibimbap, and it was extremely dry. When I gave polite feedback, the staff and even the owner responded with arrogance instead of concern.

Their reasoning was that Silver Wok isn’t a Korean restaurant, so I shouldn’t have expected much from the dish. That kind of dismissive attitude is exactly why I’ve lost all respect for the place.

After talking with friends and colleagues, I learned that many of them had similar experiences—dry food, poor service, and an overall lack of professionalism.

The food was pretty tasty and came out very quickly, although the appetisers are strangely in larger portions than the mains. Where they really let themselves down is customer service; they don’t acknowledge or greet you when you arrive, they don’t direct you to a table, without saying a word they dump the menus and leave the ordering pad for you to write out your entire order, then you need to get up to walk over and hand it back to the waitress.
