Sincerely and honestly AWESOME STAFF!!!!!! GREAT FLAVOURFUL FOOD!
Drove from Vancouver after doing CastFunPark and saw this place. Checked the reviews and i'm so glad we came to this place.
Small place but clean. Cutleries and utensils are clean too. Washroom is clean but you can see the building is old, but still good. You have to lock it even if it has a stall type of washroom good for 2 people. Lock is old school where you lift the metal handle. Has soap and tissues.
Food was awesome!!! I have been to lots of these restaurants, some have mix of Vietnamese and Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Mediterranean, European, etc... So far this place has offered a good portion of food for the hearty eater. We got the vegetable soup and it was good for the rain. It has that sour taste that's good for your throat that Thai places make. You know it's not the water-only broth. The curry was thick and flavourfu, not as oily as Indian food and not as strong that it sticks to your clothes. We ordered more than that but it's all consistently good and nothing was just made out of the can, it seems. They even put on their menu 'made with real vegetables'. We laughed at it BUT WE ARE BELIEVERS NOW.
Staff were very very very helpful. They kept on considering us if we were ok with cutleries, food, napkins...etc. They treated us like we mattered and did not give us any SASSY REMARKS when we asked lots of vegetarian questions. They were patient. The owners were also nice when we paid. We all chitchatted with them about their fish in the tank. He said it was a Lohan, aka Flower Horn fish. I thought it was the Sun fish and we talked about the famous Arwana fish too!
Asked my friends what they thought about the food and unanimously they said it is good. Dare I say better than the Vancouver Vietnamese restaurants we have been consistently going to.
Considering they have been around since 1995, they really kept the place classy with the lights low and the decor minimal.
-1 🌟 just because the washroom was confusing but they already dealt with that issue. that's about it! +1 🌟 because they were really the star. STORY TIME:
Last is my story of how I forgot my small sack bag. Had an awesome time eating at New Saigon and when we arrived home in Vancouver I remembered I left my bag there at the back of my seat :( . So we quickly left a bunch of nervous voice messages. Also, contacted their facebook, pm'ed them and true enough they replied with in 1day!!!
They had it but i was still freaking out because I had all of my important IDs and $ there. So basically I could not drive back. So my fiance had to drive all the way back and they actually held on to it while I was frantic about the...
Read moreUpdating review - The location appears to be under new management/ownership now. While the prices still run premium, ($18-$22 for a soup) the service has improved and the portions are a little more generous than they used to be. Highly recommend the Sweet & Sour Soup, Henry Special, and Pho. To date, the business has achieved good food safety scores.
OLD REVIEW - The soup broth is very tasty, however prices are quite high and the portions of meat are VERY very small (about 1/4) compared to most pho places.
This place used to be really good, but something has changed and it has gone downhill the last 2-3 years. They have raised their prices and charge for everything (without informing you of the charges), including tea - which most ethnic restaurants offer complimentary.
As the meat portions are so tiny, I generally don't go to this restaurant anymore. However, I was recently in the area and decided to splurge and ordered a house special with "double meat". I was charged an extra $5 - bringing the total to $19.95. They gave me 1 extra meatball. (6 slices of 1/4 - 1/6 meatball, bringing the total meatball content of the soup to less than 2 meatballs). I received the normal tiny amounts of everything else - 1 razor thin half slice of beef, and a pinch of tripe. I called to complain and was told that it was an extra $4 per item, and would have been $12 EXTRA for double meat. I explained I had asked for extra meat, was not told that it would be $5 or that I would only receive 2 meatballs. Management didn't care. (I'm okay with the $5, if it was actually double meat).
There are several pho restaurants in town with near-same quality pho soup, and significantly more generous portions of meat - and at lower prices. Don't waste your money, support reasonably priced restaurants that care for their customers instead. The "Saigon" chain of restaurants are owned by the same family and I have had similar experiences at their other locations. They even charge you an extra fee to order...
Read moreI will be making the long trip to this place again!
Food: This is one of the few Vietnamese restaurant that serves their version of Canh Chua (traditionally made with catfish/fish, but this doesn’t have fish) they have options of shrimp or chicken (I opted for shrimp and there was lots of them!). They call their “Hot Pot Soup” It’s a Vietnamese sweet and sour soup made with a tamarind base with vegetables (bac ha also known as Taro stem, a delicious vegetable stem that soaks up the flavourful soup - I’m making a note of this because Bac Ha here can be expensive, and so to serve it on a regular menu should be noted), pieces of pineapples, bean sprouts and tomato, with fresh herbs. You have an option for rice noodles or traditionally rice. I chose the rice option. To accompany the rice, we orders the “traditional fried rolls” it was crispy and the filling was delicious! Order their homemade ice tea! It’s delicious.
The service was wonderful. The staff kept coming back asking how things were and if we needed anything. Helpful with the menu and was delightfully attentive.
The atmosphere is simple, clean and cozy.
I can’t wait to come back and try other plates in the menu. It’s worth the trip...
