I am from Washington and used to manage a 3rd wave coffee shop. Even though its a 30 minute drive from me the asthetic and quality of this place is the closest thing to the feeling of "home" I can get. There coffee is 👌 and their baked goods are always so wonderful! I have never had a negative experience here.
The only thing I think is hard in all coffee shop aspects is to make people feel known when they walk through the door. Seems like Oldhand has a clique of regulars who are well known which is great. However I feel they are missing out on pullimg more people into the community because everytime I show up I am open for conversation and feel that its missed everytime. Yes, my order gets taken, but there's never further conversation in my personal experience and I dont go when it is busy very often. It would be nice to feel a connection of some kind especially during this time in Covid when socialization is lacking.
Even still their shop is still top of my charts. They seem to trully care about their staff and community as well, which is important to me when supporting a business.
Lastly, they are speaking out for equality and taking action to prevent spread of Covid19. I think that is very valuable for a company to show its morals like that!
Also- just an idea💡 it would be cool to see the coffee community here engage more in the future when covid is over. Like a celebration. Having a community throwdown and some kind of event to support each others businesses would be awesome and I would come to that event. I just moved here a year ago before covid19 started so I havent seen what normal really looks like in...
Read moreI've been going to Oldhand since they opened in their old location. Instagram brought me here years ago, but the quality of their food, pastries, and drinks has kept me coming back. Admittedly, I drive over half an hour to get to Oldhand, but it always feels like a worthwhile endeavor. The pastries are exceptionally done. The Earl Gray Snickerdoodle is incredible, the paska at Easter, and the pretzels with house made mustard are all amazing; that being said, I don't think you can really go wrong here. They also have sandwiches that are filling and inventive. They have a savory and hearty cauliflower sandwich that will meet the needs of vegetarians and meat lovers alike. I am a huge fan of their grilled cheese with asiago and apple. They also have a huge drink menu. They have all the expected espresso drinks using Bows & Arrows, but they also have the new Beetroot, Maccha, and Turmeric lattes that have become popular mainstays in Vancouver shops. I also love their chai latte, which they also make into a chai milkshake!
The service is always warm and friendly. It is obvious that those working there really like their jobs. There seems to be enough seats also for those staying long term to work, and those there to chat in groups.
I can't recommend Oldhand enough. It checks all the boxes for me, and it's always been worth the long drive. I can't wait to check out their next venture,...
Read more10 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT Oldhand. The people. Such friendly, welcoming staff. I'm from out of town and some friends took us there. Such a great atmosphere. Coffee. It's not like I'm an expert but I do enjoy a good cup of coffee. Flavor was well balanced, not too strong, not watery... rich flavor. Bows&arrows coffee is doing something right and Oldhand knows how's to brew it! Music. I feel like sometimes your typical coffee shop music gets old, the variety but quality of music is refreshing. Food, their baking is next level, especially dem doughnuts on Friday. The croissants are flakey and buttery goodness. Seating. Community focused seating. While this might push some out of their comfort zone it brings people together. It's nice. Decor. It's warm and cozy. Family-friendly . So many places make families, especially families with little ones, feel un-welcomed. They have toys and books... It's lovely. Menu. Simple straightforward, lots of variety, and they deliver on the flavor. Owners. It just happened to come up that I'm from Victoria, the owner right away asked what she needed to experience when she visited my town. She was kind and full of energy, showing interest in complete stranger's life. It was nice to feel like I wasn't someone just passing through. Alcohol. They serve beer, wine and cocktails. Lets face it... sometimes coffee isnt strong...
