Golden Crown — Restaurant in Ajax

Pleasantly surprised about this restaurant. Purchased a takeout for the Steamed Dumpling, General Tao Chicken, and Garlic Spareribs.

The steamed dumplings had a nice texture. The filling has a flavour more akin to Chinese BBQ pork. The dipping sauce that is provided also compliments the flavour of the dumplings. Overall, the amount you get for the price; the steamed dumplings is a great value.

As for the General Tao, the breading has a nice crunch and the sauce was sweet. Sometimes I find that other Chinese takeouts put too much sauce that the chicken turns out soggy (like Fine Taste Hakka). But our order here had a perfect amount of sauce that maintains the crunch of the chicken while still big on flavour.

The garlic spareribs had great flavour and portions as well.

I ordered around 11AM-ish when the store opened and our order was ready for pick up after 15-20 minutes or so. No delays upon pick-up thus far (as per what the other reviewers have mentioned).

Overall, we are glad that we tried out this place and it will be our go-to place for Chinese takeout...

I tried this place for the first time yesterday. Just wanted to try a new local place. Good food but unbelievably terrible wait. I ordered 2 fried rice dishes through their website at 5:50pm. It indicated it would.be ready at 6.21pm. I arrived at the restaurant at 630pm and it was not ready. I didn't receive my order until 7:05pm. That's a bit ridiculous for 2 rice dishes (over an hour from the time of order to being ready). Also the system they have when you are at the restaurant and the communication was terrible. No one indicated how long the wait would be, you just have to pretty much stand, wait and hope your order is coming soon. They come out with one order, drop it off and disappear quickly and you have to rush to catch them if you have a question about your order. As much as the food was good, it's unreasonable to be standing there for 40 mins for a pickup order. This was my first and will be my last time at this place, there are too many other similar good places around with...

Ordered on New Year’s Eve. I placed my order earlier in the day and it was ready when I expected. Chicken balls were good, like everyone is saying. But they didn’t provide sauce for them like I anticipated. (The bright orange stuff). I got an alternative. (Not sure what it was). I wasn’t a big fan of the chicken and gravy. As the gravy was a bovril based thin broth. More like an au jus dip.

Overall the Chinese food was good. But the accompanied sauces sucked. So I probably wouldn’t order again there, as I’m a big condiment person.

So my rating is 4/5 for the Chinese food. But 1/5 for the missing traditional orange sauce and gravy I’m used to getting with my Chinese food. For me they need to go...
