Peters’ Drive-In (Red Deer) Tried this place when it first opened years ago. The original, of course, was in Calgary, and now there’s one in Edmonton too. I’m not sure where else they’ve expanded in Western Canada, but growing up, everyone knew the Calgary one was the spot. Road trips for sports back then always seemed to include a team bus stopping there—bags of fries everywhere. Stopped into the Red Deer location today, probably only my second visit since it opened. Just went simple—shake and a burger. Needed something in me. The burger was just OK: one and a half patties, minimal toppings, and only afterward did I notice the sign saying you could add tomato, lettuce, and a few extras by request. Would’ve been nice if they promoted that a bit better. Price was fair for what I got. The bun was thicker than usual, and the patties tasted almost like something reheated from frozen—nothing special. The shake, on the other hand, was really good. Great’ quality there, but this is a burger place. Overall pricing is reasonable. Will I come back and try a burger fully loaded? Not sure. Literally right there in Gasoline Alley, if you’re coming from the north, you’ve got half a dozen burger options before even hitting town—plus a few more on the other side.

This place differs significantly from the original located in downtown Calgary. While their dedication to the source material, including the familiar blue and white branding, is commendable, sometimes innovation requires moving forward. Unfortunately, it seems they took the 1962 drive-in aesthetic a bit too seriously with some odd choices. What happened to the 60 years of advancements in the fast food industry? Visiting this Peters feels like stepping into a McDonald's from 1989, with uncomfortable, rock-hard booths that feel like sitting on a sketchy carnival ride and a ridiculous parking lot layout. They have diamond-shaped curbed planters with trees obstructing parking spaces. The food is okay, but it doesn't match the original Peters, and the prices have increased accordingly. The milkshakes are still good, best enjoyed in the car because the dining area feels utilitarian and designed to cram in as many people as possible, reminiscent of a hospital cafeteria. Be careful not to damage your front bumper on the diamond-shaped curbs scattered throughout the parking lot. Am I being too harsh? Who thought this was a good idea? Anyway, the food is decent, still better than many other places, but if you want the drive-in experience, consider another location.

3pm came inside the facility with my family, they were not busy, ordered a lettuce wrap burger (I’m gluten intolerant) and server ask if someone has allergen, I raised my hand and she chuckled and mentioned it to the cook and he acknowledged (didn’t take offence when she chuckled). Then we got our orders and it was not lettuce wrap as I asked so I asked my partner to get the order fixed with the tag that even says (special request allergen, and they even put it on a separate bag and still got it wrong). As they did corrected their mistake, my partner who can’t understand their dialect (Tagalog) said that when he asked for the burger to be corrected to be lettuce wrap they laughed and chuckled as if my allergen is not important. My partner also mentioned that it took 3 people to make one burger. I got my burger and I felt disrespected and not taken seriously, they made my burger a salad at this point. The whole time I did not even enjoy my meal. Did not even eat it at this point. Very unprofessional and not a pleasant experience. Normally we enjoy coming to this facility with my family but since finding out that I am gluten intolerant who is avoiding gluten and still enjoy food and find alternatives is not a good experience.

The overall concept is good- but implemented poorly. My husband and I waited in line for about 25 minutes while the cashier served 10 people in front of us. We ordered a hamburger and onion rings, and a caramel or butterscotch sundae and a fountain soda. The cashier charged us for a milkshake instead of a sundae (which we didn't realize until i was given a milkshake instead of the sundae)- not a big deal but the milkshake costs more than the sundae and no refund was given or even offered to be given. fine. the cashier forgot to give us the cup for the fountain soda when we placed the order, so when our food was ready (after waiting another 15 minutes) and he didn't give us the drink cup i had to go back and get it. (each time i went to the counter i had to cut through a line of about 20 people waiting to place their order). the food was average/good. large portion of onion rings shared by my husband and i was more than enough. When i emptied the box of onion rings after we had eaten all but three i noticed a short dark hair on the last onion ring. The staff were the most unmotivated bunch of employees i have seen in a long while... most looked bored- although i don't know why- they had plenty of orders to fill. If the staff moved any slower i think a snail would beat them in a race. Enough to make me never want to be subjected to...

While this establishment is typically known for serving delicious items across their menu, my recent visit left much to be desired. Unfortunately, tonight's experience was rather disappointing, particularly due to the quality of the onion rings I ordered. Upon receiving my order, I found that most of the onion rings were either missing the onion filling entirely or consisted of burnt, crusty pieces with little substance inside. The lack of proper filling and the overcooked texture was certainly a letdown.

Moreover, the prices of the food at this establishment would lead one to expect a certain level of quality and attention to detail. It was evident that perhaps the oil used for frying needed to be changed more frequently, as not only were my onion rings subpar, but my friend's fries also suffered from a similar fate. The fries had a distinct burnt and old taste, indicating that the oil quality may have been compromised.

To make matters worse, we had already left the vicinity and were back on the highway when we made these disappointing discoveries. It was disheartening to realize the lack of attention to detail and consistency in the food quality, especially given the reputation this place usually upholds. Hopefully, this was just an off night, and steps will be taken to ensure that such lapses in quality do not occur...
