We’ve had the pleasure of staying at a lot of boutique hotels over the years and this one will remain one of most favourite by far.
First of all, you can not beat the location. The 1851 Bayfield Landing is nestled in the middle of the beautiful Bayfield village along the shores of lake Huron between Grand Bend and Goderich.
We stayed in the Admiral room which is near the back of the building at the top of the stairs. The room is extremely spacious when compared to any big chain hotel rooms. The room has twin French doors leading to a large balcony offering a partial view on main street.
The room is well appointed with an immense bathroom where you will have your choice of a walk-in shower or a claw foot bath. There is a fridge in the closet and the owner will leave you with milk or cream to keep in your room should you wish to make a cup of coffee.
The King size bed is awesome and quite comfortable. Should the weather warrant it, you have a gas fireplace to keep warm or to add a bit of ambiance to your stay.
Our stay came with breakfast which was served downstairs in one of the side rooms of the main restaurant. If you are there when it’s not super busy, Tyler may sit you by the large picture window where you can watch people start their day off with a walk and a coffee. You may also be given the option to sit on the large patio to enjoy your breakfast.
Each morning of our stay, we were greeted by the owner who personally serves you breakfast. The Continental breakfast included amazing coffee, juices, fresh seasonal fruit, muffins, apple streudel, croissants, yogurts, and the piece of resistance; cheese curds!!
You are given a key to come and go as you please as the door downstairs remains locked at all times (PS don’t forget your key or you will be locked out). You are pretty much left to yourself unless you need something like towels or more coffee… someone is always available to assist.
We absolutely adored the energy and passion of Tyler’s chats each morning; a most interesting conversationalist.
Although we were surprised to find out there was no private parking for the small hotel, that it is first come-first served street parking, we fell in love with this busy village, the beach, the many shops and restaurants, but our stay at the 1851 Bayfield Landing is the precious memory we’ve already shared time and again with our friends...

Read moreFirst time here since the change in ownership.
I was sadly very unimpressed with the food, however our server Grace was very attentive and friendly.
I ordered the Caesar salad and 2 of the scallops in a half shell.
First, the $18.50 Caesar salad was an appetizer size. That's fine, I understand pricing has increased over the years, for $18.50 I was confident it would be delicious. I was so wrong. It was almost as though the lettuce was washed but not properly dried, resulting in watered down tasteless dressing.
Onto the scallops, which are described to be served with browned butter and crispy chicken skins, was served ice cold. It really threw me off. I asked our server if it was meant to be cold and she said yes. So I won't say this was awful, it was just a bit off-putting. I'd suggest they list the item as a cold dish on the menu.
All in all, it was an expensive meal that really really disappointed.
I don't believe we will...
