Island Hut Family Restaurant — Restaurant in Brampton

I’ve been going to Island Hut for over ten years now and they never disappoint. This place has the best Guyanese-style Chinese food in Brampton. I live in Ottawa now, but whenever I’m in Brampton, I make sure to bring food back home with me.

The restaurant is family-owned by a nice couple and they’re very friendly. The restaurant is clean and the food always tastes fresh and flavourful. The menu has been downsized for the time being and only a few items are available, so be sure to ask when you order, if what you want is still available. This is the new norm for a lot of restaurants that have had to downsize with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from the single-serve platters that they sell, they also sell catering platters that serve 6-8 people for small catering platters and 12-16 people for large catering platters. I usually get a special chicken fried rice small catering platter. It comes packed with chicken fried rice and topped off with several fried quarter chicken legs. It easily feeds 6 people and there’s a good amount of leftovers.

My favourite dishes are their chicken fried rice, chicken chowmein and their fried chicken. Single-serve platters of fried rice and chowmein are topped with shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, a slice of cucumber and a slice of tomato. I hope that they bring back the “pepper shrimp”. It was always one of my favourite dishes to pair with their fried rice.

Their servings are very generous and I know that some people might find them a bit pricier than other Guyanese-style Chinese restaurants in the GTA, but the fact that everything is 100% halal and the food tastes fresh and flavourful gives justification for that.

If i could give this place 10 stars i would. Everything about this place is amazing. When you go in, youre greeted by a lovely young woman, BB. One thing you shouldnt do, is doubt her. She would never steer you in the wrong direction and if I could get everything on the menu, trust me I would. Today I got a fried rice with fried chicken plate and it was 11/10. I came by not too long ago and tried their noodles with jerk chicken and im conflicted as to which one is better! She got me to try some of the dessert pastries and bread they had over there and lets just say, you should expect me back tomorrow. Me and my daughter went there while a short stay in Brampton. There are only 3 choices on the menu : chicken with noodles / chicken with rice / fried chicken. We took one plate of chicken with noodles and it was more than enough for both of us. Portion was generous. A good value. Food was simple but very good. It is only for take-out.

The big star of this place is the very nice woman at the counter. I believe the place is owned by her and her husband. We had a very nice chat with her during the 15 minuted wait.

Please note that it can takes 15 to 20 minutes to get your food ready.

Also don't be surprised if there is nobody at the counter when you arrive. Just wait and the lady with her great smile...
