I went to hoang yen with my sister who was visiting from out of town. We wanted some good Vietnamese food and we got just that from hoang yen. When we got there, there was a line with people coming in fours but we beat it cuz there was just us two (yass). We ordered the bun cha ca dac biet (of course), papaya salad, fried squid, and the seafood noodle soup. Papaya salad was the least favorite. It lacked sauce or something so I ended up adding the fish sauce on the table to it. It was better but I didn't finish it since we needed to eat other important stuff so I brought it back home, and my MIL really liked it -- to each their own. Fried squid was gooood. I was craving fried squid from dimsum restaurants and this really hit the spot. I thought this was better than the dimsum spots so yea I'll be ordering these next time too. The noodle soups.. mmmmm what we came for. The bun cha ca was as good as I remember (from their Vancouver spot). Can't go wrong with dill and fish. Iykyk. For those that don't know, just try it if u wanna try flavourtown noodle soups OTHER than pho or bun bo hue. My sis ordered the seafood noodle soup and it hit the spot for her. It was the right amount of sour and savory. While eating, we got more to go. Meat and rice and meat with vermicelli dishes. They were good too but I didn't bother taking pictures. Main thing is most of their dishes were solid. It was good seeing their second location doing well. I'll be back. Oh yea. There's free parking...
Read moreBrought my family here on Sunday because of the grand opening promotion. Line up was long upon arrival so we signed our name before waiting. Waiting was about 30 minutes to get a table.
It was a small sized restaurant. This restaurant was previously Daeji that sells fried chicken and pork cutlets.
We ordered #51 Banh Hoi ($22.95), #16 Seafood Hot and Sour rice noodle ($16.95), #23 Bun Rieu ($17.95) with iced coffee ($7.59. #51 Banh Hoi was tasty and the healthiest dish I’ve ordered. I didn’t know how to eat this at first. Staff told me to put noodle, meat, veggie toppings wrapped in a lettuce. Also I could use the fish sauce as a dipping sauce as well. Meat and shrimp toppings tasted pretty good. #16 Hot and Sour Rice Noodle was alright. In fact, the soup rather tasted vinegary. Couldn’t taste any hot flavour and the noodle didn’t taste that great. Even my parents didn’t like this dish much. It didn’t taste very good.
#23 Bun Rieu was pretty good. Noodle had great elasticity. Soup tasted pretty good too. If I had to pick a dish it would be either #51 or #23. #51 Banh Hoi was similar to Bun cha, but I could also eat this wrapped. Iced coffee was good! Food was good, however I would personally stick to Pho Superbowl or Viet Noodle Guy since Bun Bo Hue is my favourite dish which Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen doesn’t offer. Staff were friendly and helpful. Read more---May 2025--- Tried it again and same as last time - the bun rieu is much saltier than the Victoria branch. The vermicelli is gigantic but I find the nuoc cham and the lemon grass flavors quite bland. Their fried squid used to look like they cut it from fresh but now it looks like the frozen types. Did not have enough garlic buttery flavor and now they added some lemon pepper sauce that was 90% black pepper.
---Mar 2024--- I haven't been to bun cha ca hoang yen on victoria for over a year since I've moved. So glad it opened up right near metro. It's in an odd space where its an arc. Tables are quite close to each other and the servers need to pass by the entrance to go to the other side tables. Not the best set up.
The portions are definitely smaller than the victoria one but who knows? I havent been there for a year so maybe both places serve smaller potions now.
The beloved bun rieu is much saltier here... it still tastes good but they need to hold off the salt. The vermicelli dishes have much less meat now. The new menu calamari is tasty. It looks like they cut the squid themselves because it's not your standard squid rings or cross cut frozen ones. The garlic green onion mix they stir fry with is the same as the chicken wing one.
Overall it's still good but the portions...
