The first time we tried Peaked Pies was in Whistler many moons ago. Since that time, they’ve actually opened a couple of shops in the Vancouver area. It was at their most recent location in the Burnaby Heights area of Hastings Street that we recently visited in July. This location is quite pretty and spacious (especially compared to the tiny shop that we first visited in Whistler).
While they do have some seating available for dine-in, we opted for take-out due to the continuing COVID-19 environment that we’re in. We wound up grabbing a Lamington ($3.95), Vanilla Slice ($4.25), Ned Kelly ($6.75), Chicken, Mushroom & Leek ($8.25 + $3.75 to have it peaked), Sausage Roll ($4.75), and a Spinach Ricotta Roll ($4.75).
A lamington is an aussie-style cake square covered in a chocolate sauce and rolled in coconut (and I’ve been waiting to try this for years). The vanilla slice is a bit rich given all of the custard in the middle and I found it a bit difficult to eat. Personally, I found the sausage roll, although quite large, was a bit lacking in spices for the ground beef filling.
The thing that they really excel at is their aussie-style meat pies. The Ned Kelly is named after an Australian outlaw and is filled with juicy ground beef, ground bacon, egg, and cheese all encased in a flaky crust. I could eat this every day for breakfast (I’d probably keel over from a heart attack but what a way to go).
We got the Chicken, Mushroom, and Leek pie topped with mashed potato, mushy green peas, and gravy. By itself, the meat pie was really good with a creamy oregano sauce… but getting it peaked was even better. I know mushy peas doesn’t sound very appetizing but it really works.
A really good addition to the neighbourhood.
Update: Although we usually grab pies to go, we visited in mid Feb 2024 and grabbed a chicken, mushroom, and leek peaked pie. It's really best to have the mushy peas, mashed potatoes and gravy fresh. Did not disappoint. Nice flaky crust. We picked up a few frozen pies so we can...
Read moreWe went to the restaurant specifically for the Bite of Burnaby festival - otherwise I never would have gone. When we arrived they were out of the cake that came with the Bite of Burnaby special so we were told we couldn't order it and were offered no alternatives. I decided to stay anyway and try a peaked Steak and Guinness Pie. It lacked any flavour or spice, potatoes weren't necessarily watery but lacked any richness whatsoever, and the pie was luke-warm. Pastry and peas were alright. When we arrived there was a table off to the side facing the window, but when we approached the table still had bits of food and had clearly not been cleaned or sanitized. There were staff watching us and no one offered to clean it - I'm not sure how long it had been vacated but it was empty for at least the 5-10 minutes it took us to walk in, consider our order, and get our food. This would be a small thing if it wasn't for the fact that we're in the middle of a pandemic and every other restaurant I've been to sanitizes their tables within minutes, and there were multiple staff present who could have cleaned it sooner. The only other table was in the middle of the restaurant and next to a group, which, while it had plexiglass felt like the least safe place to sit. But safe enough that we reluctantly sat there anyway.
If the service had been better I would consider returning to try something else, but the fact that the special brought us in the first place and we were told we couldn't have it should have been a non-starter in the first place and I...
Read morePEAKED PIES in Burnaby is definitely a pie paradise! Their pies are practically legendary in town, so we always turn to them when there's a house party in the works.
We had their seasonal pumpkin pies to go. The flaky crust stole the spotlight. Delicious! What impressed us the most was the perfect balance of flavours - not too sweet. After a quick warm-up in the oven, they were ready to satisfy our guests at the party.
As loyal customers, we have always been blown away by their consistently amazing food. Without a doubt, they serve the best pies in BC. Having them right here in the neighbourhood is a sheer delight. If you're in Burnaby and seeking top-notch pies, PEAKED PIES is the place to be!
