Sushi Bar Kilala has a reputation for being a hidden gem in Burnaby. They are known for serving high quality, authentic sushi at affordable prices. There's not a lot of cooked food on the menu, and there are those who skip over the cooked food altogether as it's the nigiri sushi and sashimi that truly shine at this restaurant. I didn't actually try any of the fish on this visit as I opted to go vegetarian, but my friend was with me and she ordered several rolls with raw fish in them. The rolls were very impressive looking, not overly packed with rice and the fish was very fresh. For myself, I ordered one Avocado Nigiri, one Inari Nigiri and an Avonegi roll. The avocado filling was generous which I always like to see, and beautifully colored. There's nothing so frustrating as seeing avocado that has started to turn black and lose its beautiful green color. What really impressed me was the Avonegi roll. Before I became Pescatarian, for many years I used to love ordering Negitoro rolls when I went to Japanese restaurant. It's tuna belly with green onion. The Avonegi was an avocado roll with green onion. It may sound like a very simple roll, but I have never seen Avonegi roll offered anywhere else. I was elated to see this item on the menu and even more so to discover how much I enjoyed eating it. With the Avonegi roll, I really don't miss my negitoro roll anymore and now I wish that every Japanese restaurant would put an Avonegi roll on their menu! Service: Good Parking: Free parking at the back of the restaurant Location: 4749 Hastings St., Burnaby, BC

Got takeout here on a Thursday. Order was via phone and parking is limited since it’s a busy street alongside Hastings. I was excited to go here because my friend had excellent reviews. However upon trying to pay, their card machine froze. 10 minutes later (multiple tap, insert, swipe attempts) she said I could take the food and pay the next day if I lived near there. I don’t live close so I had to drive to the TD to get cash. I literally drove to a bank, drove back, parked and paid the full price. The house roll was huge (size of my palm) and 80% was rice noodles. The avocado was oxidized and the piece fell apart due to the size. I still had to pay full price (no discount for my trouble or free food). After eating it my stomach didn’t feel too good (a bit nauseous) and the sushi didn’t taste that good. Green leaf is better. Overall not a good experience, I feel bad because the owners are nice.

Great family run sushi spot!!!!! We came here for lunch on a weekday. Authentic mom and pops shop where mom runs the front and dad makes the sushi. No frills and very reasonably priced. I appreciate the beautiful dishware that they use, it’s very Japanese, not over the top like some restaurants and not plastic quality like others. Feels like going to a friend’s mom’s house for lunch. The dining space is very spacious and comfortable and it was nice and bright. A relaxed dining experience. We had some rolls, sashimi platter and chicken udon. Good portions and very tasty. They are limited in their cooked foods but has the basics. They are mainly a sushi spot and looks like they do a lot of takeout and party trays. This will definitely be my go to lunch spot for sushi and for takeout party trays! Love this local business!!!!!

A small restaurant, but with good portions of fish. Sushi bar kilala has a homey feel to it. It soon became full halfway through our lunch. I had the deluxe nigiri, which comes with 10 pieces of nigiri and 1/2 tuna and 1/2 cucumber roll. It comes with uni, but I added on an extra one because it's uni season and I've been craving it for awhile. The uni nigiri is very generous. It has a piece of uni on top of more uni. I felt very satisfied with it. Most of the fish was fresh and were a generous portion. They do put wasabi in the nigiri and the rolls, so be aware if you can't handle wasabi. The amount of rice was quite a bit for the negi Saba shiso roll. However, it was tasty. My only complaint is that their ginger is pink and not yellow. But overall, the food is great and they are super friendly. They seem to have quite a few regulars, as it looked like they knew most of the other customers there. Definitely check this place out. I liked their uni, saba, and...
