I've been coming here for over 5 years now and it's one of my top 10 sushi restaurants. The service is good, restaurant is clean, the portions are decent, sushi is 4/5 (compared to most mid priced sushi restaurants) and most importantly the owner is almost always around. The owner is also the head chef and he always greets you when you walk in. The restaurant is Chinese owned and operated. However, their weakness has to be their special rolls. Don't come here if you are the type that loves special rolls.
Update May 2022: My original review was 4 years ago and I would like to write an updated review. They have updated/renovated their interior space and it's look a little cleaner and modern now. Same amount of tables and general layout.
I've noticed over the years they have slowly and steady increasing their prices. I have no issues with that as long as the quality of the food/menu reflects the increased price. Obviously, you have to consider inflation but my circle of friends and I barely dine here anymore. For the price, we can get better Sushi else where. This is just my opinion and I hope the owner can look at ways to improve with all the price increases that happened in the...
Read moreTLDR: Bad food, moderate prices. I will never come back here. I don't understand how they can have such high reviews.
General: Had to ask for a plate. Didn't bug me too much however, I shouldn't have to do this. I couldn't tell whether i was served luke warm water or the tea I asked for - the tea was way too weak. The rice was overcooked and the rolls had a very uneven distribution of rice.
Spider roll (soft shell crab): Probably the worst of the bunch. It had a somewhat fishy taste to it and was unpleasant. The crab was overcooked and over salted. It was chewy which shouldn't be the case. They used romaine lettuce in this roll which I didn't like - this could be chalked up to personal preference.
Tuna Battera (pressed and torched): Probably the best roll I had. The roll was a little bland and the tataki sauce was overpowering.
Spicy salmon roll: This was just a salmon avocado roll with some terrible sauce piled on top at the end. The sauce was extremely sugary (presumably to hide the bad taste of the sauce). The salmon was not fresh.
Unagi roll (BBQ eel): This roll just had no flavour. There is not much more I can...
Read moreWow, it has been more than 3 years since I have been back here! OMG This place is still alive and still busy after the pandemic. Yes, this place is categorized as budget sushi, that is not that bad. I mean with Sushi Garden hiking their prices to the sky now, I think this place is A LOT more worth it now and on top of that, in my neighbourhood.
The quality of the cooked food is one of the best though tbh. Their deep fried chicken (karage) and their tempura were on point. On top of that, their sushi rolls were decently priced too. The price were cheap for post pandemic, and on top of that they are a local business that has been there for YEARS! Yes, it is owned by a Chinese guy and a family, but at the same time it has been a part of the Burnaby Heights community for years and it is not that bad of a restaurant located here.
Support your local businesses as this is part of the Burnaby Heights...
