Upon hearing that the owner/owners family member having celiac, i decided to give this cafe a try, having celiac myself and feeling safer in the hands of people who understand. I went a little while ago and ordered a gluten free Nanaimo bar. I asked the girl working there if it was considered celiac safe, she told me it was, so I gave it a try. It was great and I had no issues. I was impressed so I went back to try the breakfast, and ordered the GF breakfast poutine. A different girl was working but I asked her multiple times if it was actually gluten free and considered celiac safe, she assured me it was and told me she would let the kitchen know. 2 hours after eating it I had a very severe celiac response. I was vomiting for 3 hours straight and lost consciousness, which only happens if I've had a LOT of gluten. I called back the next day and I believe I spoke to the owner, who informed me that while it's GF, the hashbrowns are fried in a shared none GF fryer. Which is absolutely not GF. She also told me that she's never gotten a complaint about that (upon sharing my experience in the local celiac community, people came forward saying they got sick there too). She went on to say that the staff is all very young and new and don't understand dietary restrictions, but that her son who is celiac has never had an issue (bit concerning as a shared fryer is dangerous for people with celiac).. while she apologized profusely, it felt like a lot of excuses. No matter how young or new the staff is, if a restaurant has menu items that state they are suitable for dietary restrictions, staff should be trained in basic knowledge of those things, rather than tell customers they're safe when they have no idea what we're talking about. I had no offer of a refund or anything either. While the food tasted good, it caused me to become very ill and I had to take time off work. I realise as someone with celiac it's my responsibility to make sure what I'm eating is safe, but it's rather disappointing when a staff member ensures me that it is when they apparently don't know what celiac or gluten free means (especially at an establishment where people do have experience with this disease). While the food tasted good, and the Nanaimo bar was safe, the breakfast was very much not gluten free despite the menu saying "GF" and the girl ensuring me it was, I wouldn't reccomend people with celiac ordering off the restaurant menu, and instead sticking to the wrapped up...
Read moreAngel's Café is an amazing place with lots of room inside and a patio with several patio heaters outside. The service was prompt and very courteous with a great selection on the menu such as drinks, baked goods, frozen treats, ice creams, as well as fresh cooked food and meals.
It was nice they had menus near the door which you could look at before getting up to order which keeps the line-up moving. Every time I've been there it has been a bustle of people coming and going and always some friendly stranger there to have a chat with and network. My favourite has always been the spicy chicken sandwich loaded with lots of fresh shredded cheese, cucumbers and lettuce with a choice of two different sauces. It is great for when I have to keep driving and don't have time to sit especially when I'm carrying on to Banff for a day hike.
The last couple times there I had a bacon cheese burger which was hot and fresh and the bun was soft and fresh also. I was so happy that it wasn't one of those store bought dried out burgers that a lot of burger joints serve. It was actually a great hand made fresh juicy burger! The last time I was there they had a special on chicken wings and I ordered a poutine to go with it. Both of the items were super steaming hot that I had to let cool a bit before eating which I loved! And the wings had the right amount of sauce with a great taste and not too sweet and they mixed my up the hot and bbq sauce just right, and the gravy is that thick rich flavour kind.
I've been here many times over the past several years and even though I don't live in Calgary anymore it is my one guaranteed stop on my business trips. And always amazed that no matter how busy the restaurant is that the washrooms and tables are always super clean. Many garbage and recycle bins available for self disposal but rarely get a chance to use as the staff is continually wandering through making sure everyone is happy and tables are clean. Glad that they have been doing their part following the health guidelines, and restrictions and adapting quickly to the ever changing govt. mandates; making an inclusive space for all to feel...
Read moreLast weekend I was helping run a big event in the park for a non profit I work for next to Angels Cafe, which brought them quite a few patrons for their business that specific day. During set up I went and grabbed a turkey sandwich and a side soup. It took 35 minutes to get the food, To my surprise when I went to open the soup there was only about an ounce of soup in the b and they automatically added a tip without telling me so I thought they overcharged, I honestly would have tipped even more before I knew this was alll going to happen but they should at least tell you before they charge you.owl, and I went to eat the sandwich and there was a turkey bone in it. After the event I took the food back and the owner came to talk to me, I explained the situation and she said that’s all the soup they give, and that the bone wasn’t their problem it was the manufacturers problem. She then proceeded to tell me that I do not support local businesses (because of me bringing back the food) in a very angry manner, multiple times, after I literally had just helped bring her multiple customers. She told me that someone else would issue the refund and then walked away in a huff. I barely got two words in, and was extremely offended by the accusation considering I work in a charity that does A LOT for Calgary. I was blown away that the OWNER would say these things. I will never be going back there, which is sad, because I typically only eat at locally owned establishments. There could have even been room for us to potentially do an event there, but after that display I...
