Golden West Restaurant — Restaurant in Calgary

Starving and turned away for dine in service by a Chinese restaurant not to far from here ..my son and I ventured into Bowness and discoverers the Golden West Restaurant. We were greeted by a young lady that explained how dine in worked . You order and pay- cafeteria style- and your food is brought out in take out containers with utensils on a tray.

Desperate to feed my son something quick ( it was getting late).

We ordered his favorites via a dinner for two.

It came with

salt and pepper squid Sweet and sour pork ( normally it comes with ginger beef but he finds that too spicy so we substituted the pork) Spring rolls fried rice and wonton soup.

The young lady a mother of two young children herself totally understood and adjusted and accommodated all of our requests

I had forgotten to order the squid less spicy and my son had an Initial reaction that had him panting like a dog and waving his tongue frantically . Without hesitating- the lady taking the orders asked my son if he wanted some milk and rushed to get him a glass .

She was super observant and so so kind . She even brought some board games for him to play with while we waited for the food . I did not see but heard her children on the other side of the cafe-

This is a restaurant owned by a family that is very kind with amazing customer service . I would return for the service alone !!

The wonton soup was seasoned perfectly and the little wontons had a thin wrapping - which I prefer to the thicker kind. It had a little bit too many yellow rusticly chopped onions for my sons palate but I thought it was soooo good. The salt and pepper squid and sweet and sour pork were slightly both over battered - the pork had equal amounts fatty pork and batter -

My chef always told me the ratio of breading should at the absolute most - be 70-80 % meat and the rest batter , outside of this issue the degree of crisp was perfect . The sauce for the pork was a little too sweet but all tasted so good .

Rice was a bit oily but lots of flavour

Portions were HUGE

I still can’t get over how impressed I was by the service and the kindness from the incredibly intuitive lady taking orders . We will for sure come back for Chinese here and happily recommend them to any families or parents with young children...

Awesome awesome awesome .. i visit golden west 3 times a week can not get enough of their fantastic food .. this restaurant really captures the old style chineese culinary cuisine .. portions there are double sumo size .. i ordered golden west fried rice .. there is so many ingredients in this dish shrimp green onion sauteed beef bbq pork onion garlic ginger large chunks of chicken ,bursting with beef flavour and large enough portion to feed 3 people very easily the container of rice i swear weighed 3 pounds and also priced 4 dollars cheaper than competiton restaurant 10 blocks away $9.95 , I also ordered beef chop suey this is a very interesting dish served in traditional aluminum dish with clear plastic dome top i found this dish to be very healthy choice dish but i feel prepared some what differently golden west beef chop suey is over filling dish with an abundance of bean sprouts a large portion of oversized chunks of sauteed beef large chunks of mushroom baby corn on the cob and large chunks of carrot broccoli and garlic and onion the sauce was very juicy i feel sauce should of been a little thicker like a beef gravy but hey i m not going to complain much very delicious healthy balanced dish for also $9.95 also weighed about 2 lbs . traditional beef chop suey usually has a distinct beef flavour and very noticeable dark brown beef gravy like color but hey that is just my personal opinion on beef chop suey ..... i very much enjoyed golden west beef chop suey ... and alll other dishes i have tried from golden west .. ... this restaurant is definetly for families on budget heres a tip the savings are in the take out dishes the portions are double sumo sized for take out .. so load up the family and head to GOLDEN WEST CHINESE RESTAURANT .. they also have delivery ... sorry no comments on washrooms .... the restaurant is clean and comfortable ... the staff are very friendly and very courteous .very warm and friendly place to go for a family meal .. if i could rate 10 stars i would this restaurant has that good of food ... SO GO GET A MEAL AT GOLDEN WEST TODAY ......

Love to try new places well this one give me mixed reviews. First off trying to getting parking level 10 difficulty lol. The server we had was very attentive and friendly did a great job. My wife and I were pretty hungry so I ordered app Deep Fried wontons and she ordered the special Lunch meal Beef & Mushrooms. While I ordered the Dinner for 1 ginger beef and sweet and sour chicken balls. And this were is started to go bad for myself. I really enjoy a good chicken ball this weren't very good. There was more chicken in my Chicken fried rice. The batter was so thick and greasy i didn't even eat them all. The ginger beef was pretty good could use more spice tho. The fried rice is what I enjoyed most. My wife really enjoyed her lunch special and for the price you can't go wrong. The deep fried wontons were also a little different from the normal one. They had a thicker wrap then usual but I didn't mind them. One more thing is if you are a bigger person like myself the restrooms are going to be very challenging. Would I recommend this place? Well if you're in the area and want Chinese give them a try. I guess I am just a little saddened by the lack of chicken in the chicken balls... Or you could say I am just a little sour in how they turned out. They also charge you for each take away container which is...
