After passing by what seems to be a billion times, I finally decided to give in and give this place a try. Their BBQ is pretty good. The roast pork is a bit on the bland side for my taste. I prefer my roast pork to be marinated with a lot more five spice and marinated longer so more of the spice flavor penetrates the meat. The skin is crispier than most places make it and overall not bad. I would give this 3 out of 5. The roast duck is a bit on the bland side again. More five spice and longer marination period would make this taste better, but I also find the roast duck to be dry and overcooked. Since duck costs more in a lunchbox, I don't feel it's worth it. I would give this a 1 out of 5. The sausage is typically on the sweet side, but theirs is very sweet, so if you prefer meat on the sweet side this one's for you, but for me this is a 1 out of 5. The BBQ pork is pretty good as well. Succulent, a bit more savory than most places that make this item. I would give this a 4 out of 5. The soya chicken impresses me the most. This is the best soya chicken I've ever had! The chicken is juicy, tasty, well marinated. Just perfect! 5 out of 5!
The price point of their food is fantastic! For $10 you get a ginormous lunch box of mostly BBQ meat! You can't beat that! You'd pay more elsewhere! They give you SO MUCH food, one lunchbox lasts me anywhere between 2 to 3 meals.
Overall, I gave this place a 4 out of 5 because the price is pretty amazing and although the food could taste better, I think you're getting a pretty good deal for what...
Read moreI was so excited to try this place because of all the good reviews for roast pork but wow it was probably one of the worse I’ve had like I’m not sure if they gave me a bad batch which I kind of think they did because I saw them bring out a new roast pork but for some reason decided to cut the one piece left inside the glass while other people in front got pieces cut from the new pork but I didn’t think much of it since I didn’t think it was going to be a bad piece so that’s just annoying, not sure why they decided to give that piece to me out of everyone. Anyways, I love roast pork mainly for the crispy skin but this one was literally so hard that I could barely even bite through, it even made my throat sore from trying. I’m glad my parents weren’t over since their teeth would literally break off but man I’m so disappointed. I even convinced my bf to come here instead of the other place we were thinking and now we are both left disappointed and hungry. The staff was friendly but wow if you know that piece is bad then why would you serve it, feels like I got ripped off cause obviously they knew since they served people in front of me the new roast pork that came out instead of the leftover from inside the glass. I also ordered bbq pork, which was not bad but I still prefer suns bbq for that. But yeah, I don’t think I’ll be going back...
Read moreGrowing up in Vancouver, we have our top notch and favorite Chinese BBQ places such as HK BBQ Master and Parker Place Aberdeen Fresh Meat & BBQ so I'm spoiled with what great Chinese bbq is.
BBQ Express is not only the best place I have had Roast Pork in Calgary, but it's comparable to my favorites in Vancouver. That speaks volumes about the quality of bbq at BBQ Express.
The owner is friendly and patient. He speaks at least 4 languages including Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. I believe he is of Vietnamese descent so I give him much respect for learning more languages. I have witnessed him deal with new customers who struggle to order and figure out what they want. He never rushes them and patiently explains each item they point to. Despite a line, he will give you all the time you need!
While I have never had any of their other items, their roast pork is why I go and that is more than enough reason to come. The pork skin is crispy while the meat is flavored enough but not overly salty.
Tip: don't come close to closing or you will wind up with no roast pork as I have done recently. It...
