Vegans, do not miss visiting this restaurant!
It might be my favorite restaurant experience and all of my 38 years on this earth.
There is only one employee, and it is the infectious, generous, thoughtful, and inventive chef that you see on Homey Cafe’s Instagram. She does it all! All of the homemade cooking, packaging of her proteins which you can purchase from her shop to take home, + serving and hospitality. I could not be more impressed, and that she does this at age 68, and embraces each customer with a lot of warmth, I left wholly impressed.
The settings come across as humble in pictures, but take a closer look and you see all of the delicate touches she’s put into creating this restaurant. For example, there is a lovely, crafty, handmade tree in the center of the restaurant that she created. The menus? All her own design. She is an incredible one person show.
Now for the food. She has put so much love into making the food that she serves. The way that she speaks about her cooking, and explores different forms of vegan cooking in a colorful menu to showcase to the world the ability to eat delicious vegan meals, it is touching and encouraging. We ate there with two non-Vegan friends and we all left very full because it was hard to break ourselves away from our delicious hotpot.
What’s impressive is how healthy everything is as well. At the end, our friend got the mango Boba tea, and I saw that she put fresh mango and fruit into a blender to make this. Very different from your condensed milk bubble tea, which is laden with unhealthy ingredients. The hot pot broth is homemade as well, and we all left slurping what remained in our bowls. Portions are massive, so we took some food home.
Her restaurant is a little bit out-of-the-way for those looking to reach a public transportation, but if you are able to, do not miss this fine experience. We only had a little under 24 hours in Calgary and this restaurant was at the top of our list after visiting her Instagram.
She has decided to open this magnificent restaurant instead of retiring. I think that this business is still just picking up after deciding to change locations due to the other one being too close to a butcher shop. She can certainly benefit from some more patronage, so Vegan, please show up and support this wonderful contributor to...
Read moreOkay, so I'm a vegetarian of 5 years and had heard through the grapevine that this place is a hidden gem. 100% correct. Had some errands in the city near the cafe (I live in Airdrie) and decided to stop in. It being 330pm on a Thursday, it was very empty, but that didn't stop the proprietor from making me very welcome and assisting me with what to choose (bc I had no idea). A bunch of choices later, she bustled away to prepare my order, and I spent some time perusing the storefront portion of the establishment, which is completely vegan/vegetarian friendly and had some ingredients i didn't know i needed.
The drinks and food came out in short order, and I quickly, and very happily, dug into some freshly made pan-fried dumplings and then bbq "pork" steamed buns. Seriously, amaze-balls and 100% did not notice that they didn't contain animal products. Or nuts or gluten (not a thing for me but others can appreciate).
After I inhaled 2 persons worth of food (so good), my rubber arm was twisted when I went to grab some additional frozen packs of the steamed buns, and I ended up procuring 2 sample packs that she (Im sorry, I completely forgot her name) creates for people to make at home.
Considering that I left completely full, satisfied with what I ate, had a wonderful interaction AND purchased additional items (2 sample packs and vegan worstershire sauce), I paid less then what I've often paid at other Asian restaurants, well under $100. Oh, and I didn't partake, as I was solo, but she also does hot pot!
Btw, I just made up one of the mix packs at home, and it was absolutely fire (pic included, just missing the BBQ 'pork' steamed bun bc i left it in my steamer)
Tldr: hidden gem, fantastic food, prices and service, 100%...
Read moreIt was interesting finding this café/vegan food store in the middle of an industrial park. Tables are comfortable, some with hot pots on them, others for dim sum and lunch. We did a variety of dim sum. The house made fried potsticker dumplings were our favourite. Sui Mai were tiny and delicate, but a bit mushy. The steamed buns were good, the Char Siu was my favourite. We shared a plate of Sweet and Sour (vegan) pork with rice and vegetables. The texture of the ‘meat’ was very nice, almost like a tender pork shoulder, and the sauce mild with chunks of sweet peppers and pineapple. There were many other selections that I would try on another visit. The owner/chef is delightfully upbeat and welcoming, and explains the menu nicely. We had oolong tea served with a beautiful pot and cups, and it was a generous serving (some restaurants don’t put enough tea leaves in) that was reinfused three times. The house made chili sauce is lovely, and a little adds a lot of flavour. The website is designed more for the retail operation so I’ve included the menus for...
