Honest Review:
Meat Taste: incredible taste of shank, chapli kabab, & lamb. Tandoori chicken was ok, signature chicken was better then tandoori chicken.
Rice Taste: i ordered kabuli rice with all meals+2$ additional each. Flat taste, doesn’t looks like or tastes like Kabuli pulao.
Packaging: paper box, not thermal. My order wasn’t even luke warm. Although it was in thermal bag when delivered. I don’t blame delivery guy. It’s restaurant.
Meal Portion: portion doesn’t reflect the pricing. 18.99$ is still considered to be an expensive meal. The box size was small not even close to other Mediterranean food boxes i.e (jeruslum etc). Half of the box was filled with salad, green leaf “An old strategy of saving food”. I can say they provided 2 handfuls of rice only with couple of chunks of potato wedges. The meat skewers were small tiny tiny. I guess you can imagine now. Although meat taste was one of the best. 2 cups of sauces were inside the box also. Imagine how much space sauces cups take.
Food Price: its an expensive meal as compared to portion size VS other Mediterranean food in Calgary.
Overall: i loved the taste of meat only. Probably will go back for Shank only after couple of months. Restaurant need to workout on packaging, portion sizes, rice taste(i am from middle east and know how afghani food tastes like). Otherwise i will be a one time try restaurant...
Read morePersonally, I have never had or heard about Afghan food before but I loved the food here. It brings a level of familiarity with Kabob plates and sandwiches, but also delivers new and delicious dishes like the mantu. This is definitely a restaurant that I will frequent and recommend to everyone.
My kabob was cooked perfectly, sealing in the moisture and delivering flavorful bite. The rice was seasoned well and the spices balanced the richness of the meat and acidity of the salad nicely. The portion size is large for the price and you will definitely be full after the meal.
I also tried the mantu, which are similar to steamed dumplings but the flavor profile is unique. The spices used in the filling are a stark contrast to asian dumplings and the garlic yogurt sauce surprisingly brings the whole dish together with the added level of richness and acidity.
The service is very fast and the staff are sociable and friendly if you're into that kind of thing. Parking is free and easy since the restaurant is in a mall space with lots of spaces. Their closing time at 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays is also convenient for late night diners and people who finished their movies a little early.
I highly recommend that everyone tries this restaurant as it adds new flavors of cuisine to both the area and...
Read moreI really enjoyed my meal.. I had the mixed kabob platter with Nan bread.
This platter comes with a fresh salad which is really well done I think the salad had spinach cabbage onions and lettuce and is drizzled with a Afghani style dressing I'm not a big salad person but I'll have to admit it was very healthy and pretty tasty. I really enjoyed the two different kabobs I had one was the traditional Afghani flattened style meat kabob and the other one was a tandoori chicken kabob my preference of the two was the Afghani style meat kabob. It was served on a bed of rice the rice itself was nicely cooked but it didn't quite have the flavor I expected it was a little bit bland.. but in fairness to this restaurant I have been eating at a lot of Indian restaurants so I've developed a taste for that. The naan bread that was served was pretty thin and flat and didn't really have much flavor but it was a nice piece of bread to accompany the meal. The staff is very kind the place is very well decored and clean. I'll probably come back here again someday and I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a unique dining experience. Four out of...
