Two Pillars Brewery is a prominent craft brewery located in Calgary, Alberta that takes pride in producing small-batch, handcrafted beers. This approach allows them to maintain a high level of quality and attention to detail in each brew, ensuring that every beer that leaves their facility reflects the dedication and passion of the brewers.
I have recently tried their the Serenade Grisette, a product of this small-batch philosophy, embodies the brewery's commitment to creating unique and carefully crafted beers that stand out in terms of both flavor and quality.
Grisette is a traditional Belgian beer style that is similar to a saison but generally lower in alcohol content. Two Pillars' take on this classic style, the Serenade Grisette, is a delightful and refreshing brew that showcases the brewery's skill and artistry.
Upon pouring, the beer presents a hazy, straw-colored appearance with a fluffy white head, inviting you in with its visual appeal. The aroma is characterized by a delicate bouquet of floral and fruity notes, with hints of citrus, spice, and a touch of earthiness. The use of noble hops in the brewing process imparts a subtle but pleasant herbal quality to the aroma.
The taste of Serenade Grisette is where it truly shines. The beer strikes a perfect balance, offering a light and crisp body with a lively carbonation that dances on the palate. It delivers a nuanced flavor profile, with notes of zesty citrus, a touch of peppery spice, and a pleasantly dry finish. The malt character provides a subtle grainy sweetness that complements the overall flavor profile, making for an incredibly drinkable and refreshing experience.
Overall, Two Pillars' Serenade Grisette is a superb example of the style, demonstrating the brewery's expertise in crafting well-balanced, flavorful, and sessionable beers. It's a perfect choice for those seeking a beer that is both complex and approachable, making it an ideal companion for warm summer days or any occasion where a light, flavorful...
Read moreWe stopped by Two Pillars for a quick beer yesterday. It is a small microbrewery on Centre street, with a Belgian style beer lineup.
We were greeted by a very friendly man who I suspect may be one of the owners. We were sat on the patio on a couch. It was a hot sunny day, and our seating was in full sun so the dark couch was pretty hot. The coffee table configuration was pretty tight, so the people to our left had to squeeze by between us and our table to get by.
We ordered a Wit and a Blonde. The Wit was okay, but lacked some of the citrus or coriander character I expect from this beer style. The colour, clarity and head retention were great. I found the flavour overall to be a bit muddled and slightly harsh. In contrast, the Blonde was a shining example of a great Belgian Blonde. I’ve wanted to have one for awhile and this one was perfect. Fruity and nuanced yeast character in a bright beer.
I enjoyed our visit and would like to return to try the rest of our lineup.
One thing I noticed was our host was quite friendly but our server didn’t seem too happy to be there. We all have good and bad days, but a bit of friendliness in the serving industry goes a long way.
We will come back...
Read moreThey are in Chinatown so parking is likely going to be a challenge, but so what? You're not actually driving to a brewery, are you?
They have a moderate sized tap room seating area. It's comfy and airy, with a wood-centric decor. They have a small food menu with some very appetising looking items on it, but I didn't order food so I can't speak to it. I did order a flight of their small batch beers, which was quite nice! I would recommend gathering a couple of people and heading over.
The only thing that didn't quite click for me is the unfortunate timing of opening in the midst of the whole Covid situation, which casts a pallor over everything people leave their house to do. I have no comment that's specific to this place at all, but it does lurk in one's mind, no matter where one goes, that doing anything that feels normal is risky and ill-advised. But if I was an owner of a new brewery just being built, and I was ready to open, I know I would have to go ahead, covid or no,...
