So for context I'm not huge on coming here and talking negatively about establishments because I get things happen but after many attempts to try and prevent it from getting to this point I really was left without a choice (I even informed them I would be posting online)
Today after school drop off a couple of mom friends came over and we were deciding on where to go for lunch before picking up the kids. After looking all around the hespler area I suggested we go to Fiftys Grill because they always have a big menu with variety and it's cozy.
I had my 3 year old daughter with me and before we arrived she had decided (very excited) she wanted salmon and a fruit bowl. Every restaurant has always served her a single piece of salmon ($10-$15 a piece roughly) and happily so! They always think it's so cute a little 3 year old wants salmon
When we ordered I placed her order and the waitress seemed fine with it. She shortly came back and told me that her manager said we can't do just a piece of salmon you'll have to order the whole salmon dinner it's $27. Since my daughter was already set on what she wanted and I wanted to avoid any tantrums I said sure no problem I'll take it (with in mind anything she didn't eat my son could have for dinner)
When her food came she ate her fries her fruit and had about 3 bites of salmon and said I don't like salmon. Thinking she was just being a toddler I didn't think much of it and asked for a to go box. When cleaning up I ate the few pieces on her plate and the taste was incredibly dry and still "fishy." I understood why she didn't like the salmon.
At this point our waitress had a shift change so I informed the new waitress before the bill came that it was unfortunate they couldn't accommodate us and the meal was not enjoyed. She told me she would be back. She returned with a full bill and said " I spoke to the kitchen."
I asked if there would be anything done to compensate us considering I only wanted 1 piece of salmon and she said she would be right back.
Now mind you this is the 2nd time she has gone back and is having conversations with the owner and manager right in our plain sight. She came back and said "well are you taking the salmon home? Because my manager said if you're taking it home we cannot give you any discount"
Now at this point I was a bit beside myself and I was being very kind and not aggressive towards the waitress because poor girl just started her shift and her manager/owner couldn't even come talk to us themselves.
I responded "well I don't need to take the salmon my kids aren't even going to eat it. If it's going to be a 10% discount though then it doesn't even make sense I might as well take it home?"
She said okay let me go ask how much discount (3rd time going back) she came back and said yah sorry they said "we don't want to be an establishment that just hands out discounts"
I actually couldn't believe that the owner AND manager were having their server relay this to me and didn't even have the decency to come talk to us or show any compassion. Please keep in mind this entire time they are like 6 tables away and in plain sight.
Anyways I told them exactly what I was going to be doing with this post and I left paying full price, giving an 18% discount (because I don't believe it is fair to penalize the server)
I may add for the record that my friend was a visible minority (she wore a hijab) and I wonder in hindsight if we would've been treated with a little bit more respect if we didn't "look" the way we did.
All in all I would never go back to this establishment and it's so unfortunate that they couldn't even accommodate a 3 year old little girl and her excitement to...
Read moreI want to start by clarifying that this review is not about the food or the overall environment of Fifty’s Grill & Deli, but about a very specific and unpleasant experience we had with a server named Janet.
Janet is a blonde woman who wears black-framed glasses. From the moment she approached our table, her behavior was unprofessional and, frankly, discriminatory. She repeatedly corrected the pronunciation of words spoken by members of our group — even though it was clear she understood what was being said. This constant correction felt intentionally demeaning and passive-aggressive.
We had reserved a booth for 8 people, and we politely informed her that 2 guests would be arriving a bit later. Despite this, and despite there being multiple empty tables in the restaurant at the time (we have photos to prove it), Janet removed one of our tables and told us we should “squeeze in” to make space — which we all felt was unnecessary and disrespectful.
Another disturbing moment was when she assumed we were speaking Spanish. We are all Brazilian and speak Portuguese, yet she insisted she could “speak Spanish,” attempting to speak to us in a language we weren’t even using. It came across as presumptive, inappropriate, and ignorant.
Finally, when we asked for the bill, she took over 15 minutes to bring it, and did not bring the card machine. Meanwhile, we saw other servers using handheld payment machines attached to their aprons — clearly, this was not a technical issue but rather a choice on her part to delay and inconvenience us.
I don’t write this review to play the victim, but to speak up about what genuinely felt like racism, bias, and passive-aggressive behavior. The difference in treatment between our table and the one next to us was noticeable and deeply upsetting.
Again, this is not a criticism of the restaurant as a whole — the food was fine and the environment was pleasant. But Janet’s conduct left a lasting negative impression. She was rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful, and I hope the management takes this seriously.
No one should feel unwelcome or discriminated against...
Read moreWe were visiting Galt from Toronto and the locals suggested us to visit this restaurant. Our server was extremely annoying. She was interrupting us every 5 minutes. What kind of training is that? Once, she even told us, we could continue our chat for as long as we wanted, after she served us with bills. Here are her trips to our table: With the time difference of 5 minutes, comes to our table and asks if we are ready to order. We were 5 people and we made it clear we werent ready and needed sometime. She allowed us 5 minutes to decide and came back again. We were taking it easy...discussing dishes before selecting. Anyway... After the food was served, she comes over and asks if we needed something else (that's common courtesy and I rather appreciate that) With the time difference of 5 minutes, comes back again, interrupts our conversation and repeats if we needed something Comes back after 10 minutes, interrupts us again and asks the same questions as above We were busy in a conversation and that's why we were eating slow but does she care? No! She comes back and asks if we needed to have the food packed? We told her "no! we are still eating" Comes back, interrupts everyone and asks if she must remove the empty plates Repeats #6 Comes back again and asked if we wanted a takeout box to have the food packed. Also, "tells" us "do you want the bills now? I will bring the bills for you now and then you can chat for as long as you want". At that point we gave up and said "sure! Bring us the takeout boxes and we will leave". It doesn't end there. She brings our bills and with the time difference of 2 minutes, comes back with a machine and wants us to pay. Did we ask for the machine? Did she even care what we wanted? No!
What a pathetic experience we had. We were extremely tired after walking around the city, the whole morning. We wanted to sit somewhere, eat and relax but she made sure we don't get that experience. I still paid her tip because I know that in many restaurants, tip is shared between servers. I did not want to punish others for her annoying and...
