As in life, much depends on your expectations. First the ancillaries: the décor is clean and simple, as is appropriate for a new establishment and the service was very good with two waiting staff on hand for lunch service. Menu is well done with nice clear pics. Music was pleasant and unobtrusive, and as a mid-fi enthusiast the audio quality was noticeably better than average. Now the essentials: the food. We were two and ordered the seafood pa-jun (pancake), jja-jang myun and gam-ja tang. The pancake was on the small-ish side (perhaps the norm these days) and nicely crispy on the outside but to my taste undercooked in the center. Some (most?) might have found it fine so let's call it between rare and medium-rare, lol. The gam-ja tang was an excellent offering, with less perilla seeds than I have had elsewhere and one hunk of meat and bones less than the best I have seen, but a respectable and worthy choice on the non-spicy side. If you like yours with a kick, perhaps ask? The jja-jang was decent but given my opinion that the general north-american (global?) palate is trending way too much towards sweetness, the sauce was overly (but not unexpectedly) sweet for me. Jja-jang should be addictive in its salty and black bean flavour, not through sugar. But credit otherwise to the onions - which alone when fried provide ample sweetness - and other veggies in the sauce as well as the noodles that were well cooked without being mushy. If I were to go again, I would ask if the chef could make it without sugar - perhaps not if it's a large batch pre-made. The real kicker was that halfway through the meal, it suddenly dawned on me, there was NO ban-chan! (In my defense, we were quite involved in the discussion.) When I asked they said they had kimchi and I asked for some to which I guess they obliged. (No comment here on the kimchi given that it was not something they normally served, but it was made in-house per the server.) I can understand from the standpoint of economics and a non-korean clientele, but for the traditionals this will leave you baffled. (If you told someone in Korea, they might not believe you! A korean resto without ban-chan! Sae-sang-ae...) So if you've made it this far, perhaps you are not part of the growing population (gasp, generation?) with diminishing attention span (or is it more politically correct to state: "growing attention deficit"?), my final conclusion is: adjust your expectation and it will be a pleasant experience. Would I go back? Probably. Will they make any changes based on this review? Who knows. Probably not if they want to "canadianize" the flavour profile. One can hardly blame a resto vying to succeed in the perilous industry. But I reckon the time has come, if it were ever to come, that a korean restaurant could stand in Montreal, in the west island, by offering unwaveringly authentic cuisine. If they took that path, I for one would be a repeat diner. I have tried Mat-jip on Sources - no comment here - and Corilla on St-Charles - waiting for post-covid dining experience before considering a review. One of my favourite sayings: "Fools repeat their mistakes, the smart learn from their mistakes, and the wise learn from others' mistakes." So I hope them success and wisdom to learn from the ill-fated demise of many a restos, but in this day and age of Google reviews (is yelp still relevant? honest question), it's easier than ever to be recognized for excellence. Rant - I mean review - over. Signing off: Without Aslan, "it's always winter and never...
Read moreI am a regular customer, I've been coming here since 2023 every two to three months. I was served on the August 12th evening shift by two servers I can only assume were new to the position. The food was perfect as usual, but they kept telling us that the restaurant would close by 8:30. We said no problem we understand, by 8:25 we had payed for our food and put our leftovers in the to go boxes. By 8:35 we were just finishing our drinks, and we were getting ready to leave, one of the servers started verbally assaulting us telling us to "get out of here" and "you have to go! What's up! What's up!". Im not sure why he was instigating a fight, especially after we had payed and said we would just like to finish our drinks before leaving. I was very dissapointed, you do not talk or treat your patrons like that. I dont think I want to come back. The server in question was loud, deafening and aggressive. He was asian with tattoos if that helps. And again, I love this place, this guy was just very very rude...
Read moreABSOLUTELY MUST EAT HERE AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE! I cannot stress enough how amazing our experience here was. From the moment we walked in till the moment we walked out, 10/10. The staff is so kind and genuine, they really know how to make you feel welcome in a restaurant. Very polite and very approachable, super easy to talk to. We ordered our food and we were blown away. The flavours, the scents, the textures. THEY. DO. NOT. MISS. The fried chicken is to die for, insanely addicting. I wish I could eat here every week, but sadly I live on the other side of the island. The owner came up to us (we ordered a large amount of food, so he must've been intrigued) and spoke to us a little. He just opened the restaurant not too long ago, their chef is a native Korean chef with over 25 years experience, and he is so proud of how happy people are when they eat at his restaurant. They offer pickup and they use third party delivery, so you can enjoy their food from WHEREVER. I cannot wait to go back and bring...
