This place is amazing. Hands down one of the best bakeries outside of Victoria and without the Victoria prices.
The black forest cake is a rich chocolate and fluffy whipped cream dream. It tasted like they put a bit of kirche in there as well. The tiramisu is also fantastic. Delicious layers of coffee soaked cake with fresh marscapone cheese and cream at an amazing price of only $2.40 a slice. No place around will you find better quality or value. The do the most beautiful round and whole cakes as well.
The cream horns and hazelnut cookies are also a dream. The horns with their delicate flaky crunchy outside piped full of fresh whipped cream is just decadent. You have to try the peacock eyes as well. It's like a linzer cookie topped with a chewy hazelnut meringue and fruit center. So good and only 71¢ a cookie? Forget getting a candy to cure that sweet tooth. These guys are winners.
Their assortment of breads is also great. Everything from sourdoughs, caraway ryes, french loaves, pretzel buns, sliced breads, and a few bulk rolls and croissants that are just the most buttery flakey goodness. Pop them in the oven for a bit and have with some good ham and butter. The perfect pick me up on these bleak cold days.
They do only accept cash and debit which can be a little annoying. And yes, the lady behind the corner can be a little short sometimes. But honestly, I'll take it if that means I get to spoil myself and y husband with delicious homemade quality treats and breads.
Maybe she's just not having a good time with life, and maybe people should be kind to her anyways. I know I do. You never know what someone is going through. But definitely give this place a shot. I've been all over the world to many bakeries and patisseries, and I have to say that I really like this place. It should definitely be a...
Read moreI work downtown, one street over, and I try to grab my brunch from here as often as I can. Croissants have always been a favourite food of mine and Daniel simply makes the best ones I have ever had. I tend to gravitate towards the savoury croissants, with favourites being the ham & cheese, and double pepperoni & cheese. The flavour is balanced and the pastry is perfected.
My only problem with them is that they are SO GOOD that I cannot eat croissants from anywhere else because nothing is as good as the ones Daniel makes.
His dumplings are also absolutely incredible and when he has them available I like to buy a bunch.
I also ritually get a latté and something sweet to go with it. (usually a donut or chocolate hazelnut croissant, but today I got carrot cake which was also fantastic.)
The latté's are always wonderful and made with care. Best in town! A perfection combination to start my workday.
Not only is Daniel and his family super welcoming and kind, but the atmosphere of his new spot on Kenneth ST is wonderful. Whether it's the decor, cozy seating, or the music playing through his Hi-Fi Marshall Amp, I always enjoy popping by.
Thank you Daniel and family for working so hard and waking up so early so I can enjoy your delicious...
Read moreThis little bakery is astonishingly good nestled in downtown Duncan is astonishingly, rhapsodically good. I haven't enjoyed pastry of this quality since I traveled to Quebec City. Fantastic, crispy European style baked goods of highest quality (you can tell they use real butter, no cheap fillers or substandard ingredients). Readers should note that the negative reviews that have proliferated about this business pertain to the PREVIOUS owners. The current owner is obviously a highly skilled baker. Cowichan locals are in the know, because everything in the place sells out within a couple hours after they open.. We plan on visiting weekly. Diet be damned! I recommend the morning bun, like a cinnamon bun, but even BETTER, the apple strudel, and the circular pastries filled with lemon curd or custard. There is lots of savory stuff in the offing too, for the non-sweet tooth with a variety of fillings (ham, egg, cheese, spinach, etc). They also make bread, predominantly rye. Coffee is excellent. I am a bit of a bakery snob, and I have found few establishments to equal this on the island. Brilliant place to stop before visiting the...
