We were in town since it was raining all day and decided to visit McKecks as the kids were getting hungry. We were seated right away and the host brought us colouring books and crayons to keep the kids occupied. We wanted to order a large pizza for the 4 kids to share - but were told the oven wasn't working for large pizzas. We had to order 3 kid-sized pizzas instead, off the kids menu. So we did that (but our server never offered the beverages that came with the kids meals). My husband ordered the poutine (which he was told was a good meal size portion), I ordered fish and chips and my friend ordered the goat cheese quesedilla and the French onion soup. It took over 30 minutes for the food to arrive and our kids were starving. Their pizzas were AWFUL. None of the children wanted them or finished them, and upon trying them we understood why. They tasted frozen, they were soggy in the center and just gross. We ended up feeding them my fish and chips to get something into their bellies. My fish and chips were fine - the fish was definitely overcooked on the outside (very very darkly fried) but moist enough on the inside. My husband's poutine came in a cereal bowl with 3-4 cheese curds. Definitely not a meal size, and NOT really a poutine. The French onion soup was basically dissolved salt in water - extremely salty with no real flavour. The only dish that was "worth it" and actually tasted good was the goat cheese quesedilla. Initially it looked small but it was stacked with toppings and the flavours were good. Our server came back to drop off a bottle of water to refill our glasses and then again to check on us once (basically a few minutes after the food arrived). We were too busy making sure our kids were settled before digging into our own meals so we let her know things were fine - but the meal was SO disappointing and not worth it. I do5nt even think our server came back to ask if we wanted drink refills (2 caesars). We spent $150 before tip for our 3 adult meals and 3 children's meals (the 4th is 1.5 yrs old and just ate bits and pieces from all our plates). Our cottage is about 20 mins away from Haliburton County so we visit all the time - but this was our first and definitely last time at McKeck's. They had the olympics on and the entire place erupted in cheers when Canada won a gold medal which really added to the atmosphere. Just need to work on their...
Read moreDropped in at 3:00PM FRIDAY, and found out appetizers are $12.00!
Portion was definitely a "share", plus a to - go box!
Had the Sawdust IPA, super good, have NEVER seen it anywhere!
I think it might be the second last week for Happy Hour and we won't be back to the cottage until the May 24 weekend, along with all the other cottagers!
Back for another Happy Hour!

UesBack again for the Blue Jays 2024 opening season quesadilla game versus the Rays this time THURSDAY Happy Hour!
Had the happy hour nachos and Sawdust 14oz IPA.
BACK AGAIN for THURSDAY's Happy Hour to catch round one of the Master's and the Grand Slam of Curling!
Brought a friend, who had the havarti beef dip. She said it was tasty, but the au jus needed a little more umf!
Shared the colossal nacho platter and added the grilled vegetable feta quesadilla.
Also, had a round of Sawdust 14oz IPA!
Not sure what it was about the quesadilla. Normally it's on a corn 🌽 tortilla, and doesn't have so much filling. The salsa topping was tasty, didn't seem to be the same as the salsa that came with the nachos.
I would suggest less filling!
Had three take home boxes, for to tomorrow's lunch!
Back again for Happy Hour! Unfortunately they were all out of IPA.
Had the local Boshkung 118 Cream Ale! Hints of citrus 🍊.
The nacho supreme was outstanding AGAIN!
Nicole B. did a great job taking care of us! Had a to - go box for tomorrow's lunch?
The door was open to the patio. It crossed our minds!

Read moreGreat food, pleasant atmosphere. Sadly, our ultimate family birthday experience was greatly lacking.
When I called the manager on Sunday to express my concern and share learning opportunities, I was told she couldn't speak with me or tell me when she would call me back, "We're busy, it's the long weekend".
I found out yesterday, when I called back, I had been speaking with the owner, A message was left for her, but no phone call yet.
Drove 45 minutes to enjoy this recommended restaurant. Disappointing
Some of the service issues: having to ask for a spoon multiple times food for the person to my left, served across me, table was free standing (not good regardless, but in flu season?) soup order forgotten, asked for take-out with a spoon so we could taste it while there ... was a real disconnect issue with removing all three empty glasses when asked to
End result a snippy waitress, who brought the birthday boy dessert while two people were still eating their main, then a bill and machine being plopped down in the middle of the table shortly thereafter.
Clearly, we were being rushed b/c she was going off shift. The server who over for the last 5-10 minutes, reproduced a bill with her name on it.
Did our original server receive any of the nice tip we left as an incentive for the young waitress?
We may never know b/c it seems like no one really cares, even the owner / manager.
I'll leave it to you to determine whether it is...
