I went here today as my partner (non-celiac) recently brought home a cinnamon bun from elsewhere which activated my craving. I have only recently (last 2 years) begun to experience problems with gluten. While not officially celiac I avoid it like the plague nowadays.
The thing I missed most was cinnamon buns. Not only are they quite hard to cook gluten free, but it can be very hard to get one that is yeasty, gooey, and sweet and does not come out like a rock or crumbly, or dry. Even being a seasoned baker before I had to avoid gluten, they prove difficult to make.
I have been on a quest to find a cinnamon bun that is good, the most recent place was in B.C. but seeing as I am in Edmonton that is difficult to access!
Well I made the drive today to sample Celebrate, gluten free's cinnamon buns and I am pleased to report that it is darn good. Even comparing to a "regular" cinnamon bun it holds up, if not exceeds the taste. Popped it in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm it up and it was amazing, pulled was nice and soft, gooey, and delicious.
I could not be happier, and they have a new customer for life. I also tried the bread and it was great for my grilled sandwiches at home. I look forward to sampling more of their selection, maybe even having some cakes made down the line.
My only gripe is that it is in a pretty sketchy area, I wish they were closer to me on the SW side...but it wont be a deterrent to future visits. Also I cannot imagine they are very happy with the construction which makes it even more...
Read moreCelebrate Gluten Free is a nice little bakery cafe in the Edmonton area. The food is very tasty and the egg breakfast sandwich is great for people like me that miss indulging in Egg McMuffins or Tim Hortons breakfast sandwiches once they have to go gluten free! The interior is done up super cute with soft colours, although it is a very compact location so if you want to eat in you need to hope it's a slow time of day. There are only two things that made our experience less than ideal. One was the lack of proper menu listings, it's a bit of a nusance to have to flag someone down to ask the price of individual items. Two, the location. I'm sure that the leasing costs are lower if you are in a less than desirable area (which as a business owner would be appealing or necessary), but to the customer it can be a deterent. The day we visited, there was a very intoxicated street person inside the cafe trying to peddle for money or free food. The person at the counter indicated that it is a fairly regular occurance because of their location. When the total area of the cafe is only about three tables and a counter it can make things very uncomfortable, especially if you have children with you. The only thing I would love to see in future is the inclusion of nut free to the gluten free status. Many people who go gluten free have other food allergies as well and nuts is most common. That...
Read moreWe needed a dairy free and gluten free option for dessert for our wedding so we contacted celebrate gluten free via email. They are lacking in the communication department, as it always took multiple emails to get information from them because they would not be thorough with answering my questions, or sometimes I would have to remind them to respond which was frustrating. They suggested for us to come in for a tasting, so we did, and they made us buy the cupcake, which I guess I should have known about. Their cupcakes, doughnuts, and the wedding cake we got were very delicious, and they were able to accomodate a dairy free gluten free option of carrot cake. However, The cake was not what I asked for style wise. I showed them a picture of a darker purple marble style iced cake and specifically asked for none of the dollops of icing that were on the reference photo... My coordinator picked up the cake and showed me it and it was the wrong purple (light lavender, not dark purple), not marbled well, and had the dollops of icing on it that I asked for them to leave out. It was disappointing but I decided just to get my coordinator to decorate it with flowers instead of sending it back, which made the cake look nicer. Again, the cake was yummy...
