Taste of Edmonton: Lower Your Expectations & Just Enjoy the Vibe

I ordered off of DoorDash so I can’t speak to the customer service or Atmosphere of the restaurant. However- the food is just not good. Been on the hunt since moving here for an authentic Jamaican restaurant. This ain’t it. Or at least for my black folks.. this just ain’t it. Very watered down. I’ll include a picture, I ordered jerk chicken over rice and I needed to go back to the website to ensure they didn’t screw up and give me bbq chicken or something. Tasted it and my tastebuds are so confusedšŸ˜‚ is it bbq.. is it hot sauce.. is it hot n honey.. idk but it sure ain’t jerk. Rice n Peas just taste off.. real salty. Anyway, long story short.. check it out for yourself of course, as I did- despite the reviews. But if you’re hungry as hell, and not willing to play around.. avoid.

I haven’t been here since I was a kid and so happy to say that it’s still as good as I remember!! Today happened to have a Jerk Chicken special which I found out is every Wednesday. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned…the jerk wasn’t too spicy or over powering and matched amazingly with the rice and beans. For the quality and quantity, I don’t think there’s a better deal in Edmonton on a Wednesday. Restaurant was clean and inviting and the lady serving was friendly and welcoming. They have daily specials that I look forward to trying!

Response: Hello,

To further answer your question as per my review. I order two large oxtails, 2 patties and 2 sodas.

I understand that you may be the longest run Jamaican food store in Edmonton, just because you have a monopoly over the industry doesn’t equate to you doing a good job. The real question is are you and your staff passionate about the work you’re doing because the food does not reflect any passion, care or love.

Jamaican cuisine is born from taking something undesirable and turning it into a delicacy. The food from this establishment tasty like a slap in the face to the entire culture.

Let’s discuss the food it’s self, the patties were over baked, dry and burnt a very unusual combination. The oxtail meat was extremely tough, the favour didn’t have enough time to saturate into the meat, tough, boney and no favour another unique combination I’ve only experienced at your establishment. The rice and peas were very dry and over cooked, also something new I got to experience at your long standing restaurant. The dumpling being overly oily and dry and tough all at the same time, was just disgusting to be honest. The slap dash store bought lettuce shreds with the store bought dressing was the only thing edible on the plate. The drinks were delicious but you can’t take any credit for that.

And to make matters even worse I spent a wapping $64.73

I’m from Toronto, my family is Jamaican.

Don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining.

Initial post: These people should be ashamed to call themselves Jamaican. If you enjoy throwing your money away defo come here. I will not be. The prices are insane the food is a glorified dog food. Pet smart offers better...

This place has been around forever… and I really don’t get how?

I love island food, and have eaten it here. In Toronto and from lots of Jamaican kitchens.

This is why I don’t understand how this place is open when their food year by year gets worse. It must be new owners or new cooks but they should be fired.

I also see they offer a discount for 5 star reviews so you know you’re being lied to

About 8 years ago, it was OK but the past few years - I end up ordering 1 time a year and am reminded why I don’t order regularly. This was my last attempt.

Over the years the portions have gotten smaller and smaller…

The ox tail is bad…. Like it’s so spicy it over powers are the other flavours that should be there. You pay for extra ox tail but don’t get it.. it’s the same portion. I asked for extra ox gravy, didn’t get it.

The stew beef… SALTY! Did the chefs taste it? At all? Because it just tastes like salted beef.

The coleslaw - they are getting so lazy they just put some sort of sauce over cabbage now.. don’t mix, no flavour just sauce on top of cabbage.

Dumplings are mediocre at best but pretty dry.

I think they are riding off being around so long that people will keep coming or because they are the only south side one? Or maybe people who haven’t had GOOD island food?

I’m not sure but they need to step it up! When you pay over $50 for 2 meals and you could have went to a McDonald’s dumpster and ate better there — time to look at your kitchen skills.

I won’t be ordering again, wasting my hard earned money on a place that doesn't care what they send...

I have mix feelings and very sad to be honest about my experience! I have been a customer ever since I was a teenager .. I would take the bus from the west and end and get what I call ā€œJamaican foodā€ it made me happy and the vibe was always homey and very loving.. The owner very sweet woman would greet me with a smile… 2021 each time I would come and pick up food.. the would be either be left over food or something rather.. I never complain cause I know time and business (covid) took a lot …but there is always Uber eats and ratings now a days it means that the restaurant prosper.. I would post on FB and I would post on Instagram just to support.. But to quite honest .. Roti is not eatable at all, dumplings has gone rock hard, the meat what ever you choose to buy taste like it was from 5 days ago… I tried calling to see what anyone can do.. the poor nice girl who is trying her best can’t answer nor deserve the heat… Now a days when our wages don’t go up and food prices go up and yet standard of the food is worse than digging in the dumpster.. it’s sad it’s all I have to say .. I’ve been a customer since I was 15 yrs old and I am now 45 yrs old.. very very very very sad and disappointed.. I don’t believe I will be going back ever.. it’s not worth the money, the energy, nor the time that...
