I am extremely disappointed with this company. I love to support local and try new things. I ordered from the seasonal pint club delivery service. I really like that right away it asks if you have any allergies and provides substitution options if the flavors contain an allergen. In this case, my sister has a very severe nut allergy so of course I indicated that and chose a substitute flavor. Unfortunately none of the flavors have descriptions so it's unknow what the ingredients are. It indicates on the website that a 3 month subscription is $41.40. It does not say anything about that being a monthly payment, just $41.40 for 3 months.
Fast forward and I get contacted by Nicole Haywood a representative of Made by Marcus who politely reached out to let me know that the substitution flavor I chose contains nuts but not to worry none of this months flavors have any nuts. Wow I thought this was excellent customer service!
Fast forward again to my shipment. I was so excited only to be immediately disappointed by the flavors that arrived, they had very unique names such as "Pesche Cookie" which I had never heard of, nor did the container provide a description. I noticed the pints had no ingredients or nutritional info which I found to be odd given the Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirements. One of the pints was red in color and indicated it was a dairy free frozen dessert. After trying it both my sister and I immediately felt unwell and found that none of the four pints tasted good at all. I the looked at the "dairy free frozen dessert" pint and noticed it says MADE WITH CASHEW MILK. We immediately panicked as my sister had just consumed this and is severely allergic, luckily she only had a spoonful (since it didn't taste good) and was able to handle the reaction without the use of her epi pen. I was shocked and confused as I was told directly through email that none of these products contained nuts. I immediately called the store and sent and email and was told to await an email back.
Long story short, after multiple emails back and forth with Nicole after she would not speak to me on the phone she agreed to cancel my subscription, however no offer of a refund, a quick "sorry you were misled by our packaging" and being informed that the packaging is INCORRECT and no nuts were used. I'm left confused and shocked that a company that takes an allergy conscious approach would be so indifferent with an incident such as this. Side note.. I was informed that I was only charged for one month $41.40 so heads up that this is the cost for FOUR pints, not a 3 month subscription as the...
Read moreI have a very severe dairy allergy, and when I heard there were vegan options for ice cream at ‘Made by Marcus,’ I was super excited. I don’t usually go out to ice cream shops for ice cream so I would usually buy vegan ice cream from the grocery store.
My friend and I had to wait in line for about 30 minutes. When we finally got to the front of the line, I noticed that the staff was using one ice cream scoop for all of the ice cream tubs. This scoop was placed in a cup of water between each serving, but I didn’t notice the water getting changed in between servings. I was super worried about cross contamination, and I noticed they used that same scoop for the vegan ice creams as well. I told a staff member about my dairy allergy and I asked if they could clean the scoop for me or use a different one for the vegan ice cream. They refused to clean the scoop since it was “rush hour” and they were very busy. They also told me about the potential cross contamination that already might have been inside the vegan ice cream tubs. They told me that if I had a severe allergy, I shouldn’t get any ice cream - they did not suggest any alternatives. I ended up coming out of the store empty handed while my friend who didn’t have an allergy enjoyed their ice cream.
What boggles my mine is the very fact that they labelled some options of their ice cream as vegan, but they would use the same scooper for every ice cream flavour. If the vegan ice cream options were served truly vegan, there would be no cross contamination. Why can’t the vegan options have a separate scoop? This isn’t true vegan ice cream if there’s going to be a trace of milk in the ice cream when it’s served. I feel this is unfair for people who take veganism seriously or have any allergies. I know the menu inside the store mentioned to tell staff about any allergies, but I feel like they need to take handling allergies and cross contamination more seriously. There is also nothing mentioned on the website about potential cross contamination. Why can’t each flavour of ice cream have their own scoop? I’m sure the ice cream is great - my friend enjoyed their ice cream. My personal experience with ‘Made by Marcus,’ however, was unsatisfactory and disappointing. This was my experience back in September 2019, but if the staff has made significant changes to this by then, I will come back and hopefully enjoy their ice cream. In the meantime, I’ll still consume the vegan ice cream...
Read moreToday was an unfortunate day for me and my experience with MbM on 19429 121 Street NW Edmonton at the Brewery District.
Having experienced better overall service in the past, I was disappointed by the lack of consistency that seems to be presenting more and more over the past year.
From the moment I walked in to the time I left, I felt as if I was entering into an underground club where I had to yell with the bartender in order for each of us to hear each other.
The music was so loud that I could barely hear what the person was saying behind the counter while also having to yell back at the person in order for them to hear my response.
Not only that, but the when I asked for a suitable flavour combination to try with the Matcha Vanilla, Lemon Curd Blueberry was chosen, and for my tastebuds, I feel like it was a poor complimentary choice.
On a side note, for the Wilfred’s that’s attached to MbM in the Brewery District, switching their sourdough bread for a milk bread alternative to go with their meals, was also a poor choice. Milk bread is more of a dessert bread and not really suited for grill cheese or burger style handhelds.
The tomato soup has also gone down in quality with the recipe that is currently being used and the salads are sub par for what we’re paying for.
I can only hope that the menu as well as the overall experience improves as time progresses for this...
