The Good: It was our first time at Sang so of course we had to try the chefs table. We really enjoyed the food. There was good variety, both in terms of the type of dishes as well as temperature. There wasn't anything we didn't like. The pancake was especially delicious. We both enjoyed our drinks, they were tasty and the presentation was nice. It was really neat how they transfer the plates to your table and overall, the experience and vibe were great.
The Bad: A small thing but we did notice that the oysters meant to come with the Chef's Table appeared to have been switched out for salmon sashimi. Nobody informed us of this change before, during or after the meal and its not really that big a deal but I was looking forward to the oysters.
The Main Issue: We came on a Tuesday. As you may have noticed, they proudly advertise their Tuesday special of 34.90 (I may be a few cents off) for the Chefs Table, versus the regular price of 49. As I understand it, each person chooses their main dish from the list and then you all share the preset side dishes.
Of course, like everyone lately, we are more conscientious of money that before but its still nice to go out to eat. We decided that with the Tuesday special, it would be more doable for us and a nice treat.
But what rubbed me the wrong way and somewhat tainted the experience for me was what felt like a bait and switch. The advertisements of $34.90 get you in the door. But when you sit down and read the Tuesday menu you see that every single main dish has an up charge. If there were perhaps 1 or 2 main dishes that were a premium I think I could overlook it. But every single one was, if I recall, between a 2-9$ up charge. This means that it is literally impossible to get the advertised meal at the price of $34.90.
Times are tough, especially for restaurants. I get it. But I just feel like, instead of advertising this way, why couldn't they just say the special is between $36.90-43.90. The food is good. The experience was great. People will pay it. But advertising at a price that cannot actually be achieved felt really misleading and still has me thinking about it the next day. We didn't bring this up to our server because its not their job to remedy a problem created at the top.
I write this review in the hopes that perhaps this advertisement strategy will be reconsidered by management. Even if not, at the very least I hope other would be diners may read it and go in knowing what to expect and not be caught off guard (and...
Read moreI was really excited to try Sang because of its cool and unique dining concept. My husband and I went for their Valentine’s menu, but unfortunately, we left disappointed.
The shared dishes were mostly good—not outstanding, but okay. We got the smallest oyster too, so it’s like eating air lol. I get it we’re not by the ocean, but better quality control would help. My husband’s rice was burnt and mine was fine.
For our mains, my husband ordered the steak, and I had the cod. The portion sizes were quite small, and despite all the items included in the meal, we left feeling hungry. My husband even finished off my rice with just soup to fill up. lol My fish was underwhelming and lacked flavor.
The bathroom was beautifully designed but was quite dirty.
Our server was friendly but slow and forgetful. She forgot my husband’s pop, served an uncomfortably warm glass of water, and then refilled it with cold water—very inconsistent. I chose a drink pairing special for my meal. The wine meant for my main came after I had finished eating. The last cocktail was served after my husband had already paid the bill. I’m not one to waste drinks we paid for.
Didn't like that there was no dessert included in the set menu, maybe because we were still hungry after. Also, please be transparent about additional charges. The booking page listed $79 per person with the option to select a main, but it didn’t mention the $10 surcharge for the steak option. It would’ve been nice to know in advance.
Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. I’m not sure if it was just an off night, but I heard a similar experience from a friend. I wanted to give a heads-up to anyone intrigued and thinking about trying...
Read moreMy family and I loved our experience at Sang! My mom flew in from Vancouver to help us so we wanted to treat her with a special meal and Sang definitely made our night special! We had the basic Sang and added one protein: grilled chicken. We all enjoyed the main dishes (pork rib, garlic chicken, and grilled chicken) and the side dishes. There were so many options, flavours, textures, and ingredients with the side dishes that even the pickiest eaters would find something that they can enjoy. Everything was seasoned perfectly: not too sweet, not too salty, not too plain, just right! My two kids (2yo and 7yo) who can be picky eaters had no complaints, loved the meal, and came out with full bellies! The only complaint I have is that I couldn’t breathe by the time I finished eating because I was so full 😂. Half way through the meal I was already full but I kept eating anyway because they were so delicious. Yet we couldn’t even finish everything! so I have no idea how anyone can say that the portion was small. The portion was very generous and the side dishes offered variety of choices. The bathroom is not very kid-friendly as the sink is very high (so is the soap that’s mounted on the mirror) and has no stool for kids to step on. They do have a diaper changing station though. They charged $10 for my 7 yo which I thought was very reasonable, and no charge for my 2 yo. (Thank you!!!) Everyone was very friendly and quick to help us. Overall, we LOVED it, I would recommend it for anyone who wants to try an authentic han-jeongshik or just wants a good meal with friends and family, and we will...
