Today was a sad day, Simon was the king of the Southside not only for Donairs, but burgers, subs, pizza all of their food ruled you couldn’t order anything bad.
Alas that was a long time ago and I ventured back to Simon King after being away for 5 years or so and expected to see the same friendly faces and great food and service but I was in for a rude awakening.
Did not recognize anyone from the previous 10 year span when I ate at Simon King twice a week for years. Came up to the counter and waited almost 5 minutes before any of the people behind the counter even acknowledged us.
I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger combo and it was basically a frozen patty with fake bacon that was as hat as a shard of glass, but I considered myself lucky as my counterpart had it much worse.
He ordered a Pizza Sub with a poutine and a can of pop and that ran him almost $30. Got the sub and picked it up and the frozen shredded cheese was falling out of it like a snow blizzard. He bit into it and it was ice cold, meat was frozen, cheese was frozen. Now correct me if I am wrong but your mouth should not get colder buying into a Toasted Pizza Sub, it should scald your mouth like the depths of hell.
He took it back and they said they would make it better, got it back a few minutes later and the cheese was melted but still cold as ice in the middle, he was a kinder person than I and asked for a to go container and promptly threw the inedible remains into the trash can when we arrived back at work.
This place used so to be not only a top destination for donairs but a true gem for any of their delicious food. I am truly flabbergasted at how far this place has fallen to the point that they squirt ketchup on a tray and when I asked for more ketchup they squirted more onto the existing ketchup pool that was already on my tray.
It is a sad day that I bid farewell to and old friend that was like the 80s Oilers Dynasty for so many years only to end up becoming the monstrosity I experienced today, I can safely say I will never step foot in this establishment again,...
Read moreI had a very bad experience here. All was good till they switched off the dining space lights while me and a couple of friends were still dining. When I enquired why they turned off the lights, they said they're closing at 9pm, It was still 8 :50 pm. When I said you should at least inform your customers that you're turning off the lights, they started getting defensive and then aggressive to the point they started abusing us and telling us to get out of the place with usage of very bad language. It is unbelievable they said that, I've never seen such behaviour elsewhere. Maybe they've had bad experiences with some customers, but that doesn't give them the right to abuse other customers. It's as if they don't care. This kind of treatment to customers is unacceptable. They should not be into this business if they don't have the basic decency of treating their customers with respect. I'm not sure about the guy who abused me, but if it was the owner, I'm very...
Read moreAbsolutely delicious. The sweet sauce is on the thicker side, and the donair beef is spiced very generously. In other words, Simon King's donairs are made just the way I like them. Another note is that the donairs are actually served quite hot, as opposed to the warm/lukewarm types you get from several other places. The meat is shaved then allowed to sit on the grill for some time before it's wrapped up, giving the meat that nice slight crispiness.
If I had to nitpick, the naming scheme for the sizes of the Donairs are a little misleading. The "Super Donair" is a lot closer to being a small that you'd get elsewhere. The portioning of the meat also isn't overly generous like at standout places such as Swiss Donair.
All in all, Simon King is a great spot. It's a little out of my way, but I'd definitely go...
