We went to Yummy Kitchen on a Wednesday evening after reserving a table for 7 people. After sitting down and waiting for 15 minutes, no one came to ask us if we wanted anything to drink…nothing. The two servers there, one is named Fan, just stood there at the counter looking at us and doing nothing. There were only two other tables that were occupied, yet the noise level was annoyingly high. I’ve been to Yummy Kitchen several times in the last year, and one of the worst things about this restaurant is its size…very cramp and uncomfortable! If you want a headache generated from all the loud noise in such small quarters, Yummy Kitchen is the perfect place to get one. Not a good dining ambiance at all. When we were finally attended to, we ordered 6 dishes. The food is okay. I noticed they put a lot of sugar in the peppered beef dish that we ordered; the sauce was overly sweet and lacked savoriness. However, the worst thing about Yummy Kitchen is the service. When I went to the counter to pay the bill (I paid cash), the server Fan handed the cash back to me and rudely pointed at the receipt telling me what the total of the bill was. At first, I thought had underpaid the bill but no…I actually paid more than enough and she was demanding more, suggesting that I didn’t tip them enough! I would’ve given her more, but the way she was acting, rude and disrespectful, I decided that was it, that’s how much she’s getting for that kind of nasty attitude. Tipping is discretionary and not mandatory. If you get awful, rude service like I did, do not feel like you have to tip MORE just because the server expects you to! When I returned to my table, Fan and the other server stood at the counter giving me dirty looks. This was my experience at Yummy Kitchen that evening. Like “Wow, unbelievable.” I will never go back to this restaurant again. They spoiled our evening and made what should’ve been a nice family dining experience into a...
Read moreMy first time trying this place. The "Black Pepper Chicken" item I ordered was very good, and the "Ginger Beef" was a bit better than average (for Edmonton), but where this place completely failed with me was with their Tom Kha Gai soup.
On the menu, it said "Tom Ka Gai (Spicy) Soup" and I could already imagine how it was going to taste since I have had this kind of soup quite a lot in my life. When it arrived, however, it had a few vegetables and a few pieces of seafood like shrimp, baby scallops, and squid. No chicken. No coconut milk. Not even a little bit spicy. And a broth that tasted like water with a few drops of tomato flavor added in.
When I called to inquire about what was going on, the chef apparently said that Tom Ka Gai soup with seafood doesn't have coconut milk; only Tom Ka Gai soup with chicken does. However, the "Gai" part of the very title means chicken, and this is the first time I got this kind of soup without coconut milk added. Absolutely flavorless!
Since it was $18.70 + tax + tip + service charge (DoorDash) for this bowl of Tom Ka Gai soup that was actually a bland seafood soup and not a Tom Ka Gai soup at all, I can't help but feel completely ripped off here, and deceived as well.
To the chef: please learn how to make Tom Kha Gai soup. There are many fine recipes on the internet that can help you make something that actually looks and tastes like a Tom...
Read moreI visited this place about three weeks ago out of curiosity and have been meaning to share my experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a woman who wasn’t very welcoming. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, because everyone has off day, but unfortunately, the rest of the visit didn’t get any better.
The food was a major letdown. It was clearly not fresh, you could tell it had just been reheated in a microwave or pan. The rice came in a huge portion, but it was very dry, and the entrée itself was barely a scoop, and even that wasn’t fresh. I didn’t even end up eating the meal.
What made it worse is that they make you pay before the food is even prepared, which felt backwards. This setup also pressures you to tip someone before you’ve received any service or food. On top of that, they charged me for a bag without even asking.
There seems to be no principle behind how this place is run. I felt like I just flushed $22 down the toilet. It’s not about the money, it’s about the principle of expectation to receive, decent, fresh food and...
