I came upon this café hidden in the middle of the UBC campus with a friend while exploring our alma mater on a Friday afternoon last week. We didn’t stick around as we were on our way to the Pacific Spirit Regional Park trails. However, the setting of the café was enchanting enough for me to come back with my husband two days later for Sunday breakfast.

We ordered our americanos, breakfast croissant, and breakfast sandwich and found a table in the courtyard outside the chalet-looking building of the café. There is small park in the courtyard along with about half a dozen tables. It was still rather early on a Sunday morning before 0930. It was quiet but neighbours were starting to emerge for their morning coffees, yoga stretches and dog walks.

The americanos were rich. Good sign before we tasted our coffee: they were not served in mugs, foamy, and dark. Our croissant and English muffin sandwiches were pressed. My croissant had cheese and turkey slices with an addictive spicy jam. The English muffin halves of his egg and ham sandwiches were so pressed that they did not resemble English muffins. However, he said it was so good with its texture, greasiness and flavours. I think I’m going to get...

My boy (11y.) ordered hot chocolate for him and his sister, I (the mom) was behind them and listen, so if they need help to step in. I noticed that the lady on the counter didn't pay atention, kept talking aldough she saw kids waiting. The barista made it iced ( from the corner that was staying I saw how it is made-ice and the cheapest chocolade milk that is in the supermarket). I sad that my boy ordered hot ones. The manager came and tald my boy: You ordered iced ones now you want hot chocolate. I steped in saying that I heared him how he did the order (he speaks clear English). I did'n like the egnoring and after that the accusatory behavior to the kids- here feels like discrimination . We finaly got the hot chocoled made by the manager (she made the barista feel uncomfartoble when she got in charge making the chocolades). I decided to try it and that wasn't the chocolate that we ordered the previous week when we visit UBC Beans Around the World - it was worse quality- saving from the chocolete syrup. My son and my girl (6y.) felt the diference. I...

The food is great and the servers are helpful and polite. The owner is super rude and impatient. The place is mainly populated with the students and the faculty of UBC and deserves an educated and courteous owner. She constantly walks around you with angry looks and occasionally asks you to leave the place if you sit there for more than two hours and not in a nice way. Hey, who has put this two-hour law for the place especially for the regulars and in light of the fact that I ordered breakfast and lunch. The ambience is very boring too. They always play the same horrible music. Altogether, the owner seems very irritated by her job and that place does not make you feel welcome. The food is very expensive and nothing special that you cannot find much much better and more delicious of it in Breka for example. On the other hand, the servers are so polite...

Location is fantastic with outdoor seating surrounded by gardens. Interior of the shop is cozy, reminiscent of a log cabin. There used to be a few baristas that came off as aloof, but for the past year or so I’ve had only pleasant interactions with the staff. I haven’t had anything here that hasn’t been delicious. They have a great variety of vegetarian and vegan food and the portions are pretty generous. I really like their tea selection, they make a good matcha latte, and the espresso’s not bad either.

The Vietnamese latte has the perfect balance of strong and sweet. It's really good either hot or cold. Must try at ubc batw branch. Strawberry matcha was disappointing. The matcha had clumps and the strawberry syrup seemed like a grocery store strawberry jam. Food isn't great. It's mediocre at best. Better options on campus with bigger portion size for the same price. Nice indoor seating space with power outlets, good spot to work. Nice outdoor seating arrangements.

Cozy and rustic, with outlets around the side. They're also licensed, with beers on tap. However, the cafe does fill up and I find things a bit expensive, especially given the majority student clientele (prices for drinks and food are typically higher than Starbucks'). I had their vegan wrap (~$8), which was quite delicious, though not too filling. But if you need a good, clean study spot in the area, then Bean Around the World is a comfortable option.
