I came to The Keg in Fort MacMurray because I'm staying in the hotel attached. What a complete waste of time... Its been a long time since I've had such horrible service. I sat at the bar, only to feel like I was inconveniencing the bartender. I mostly sit at the bar b/c bartenders are generally sociable. I ordered a beer and fried cauliflower (the absolute worst fried cauliflower I've ever had, soggy af) I ate maybe half of it, even asked for a different sauce to try and save it, no such luck. I was not quality checked. I was not even asked if everything was ok after I left a half full plate of food, which is industry standard. (Well at my restaurants it is, and we're not even considered as high end as The Keg) I pulled money out, so I could escape and end this experience once and for all. I was asked if I "needed" my change, then my receipt was taken away and crumpled in front of me with a "thanks a lot". There were managers on the floor who walked by, never even offered a simple hello. They did gossip with the staff though. All the staff seemed to spend a lot of time in the back. I will offer up the fact that I had just checked into the hotel after a long drive and looked exhausted, I generally dress up a little more to go to The Keg but I was exhausted and just wanted a bite before a nap. However being a restaurant manager myself for the past 15 years , I have learned to never judge a book by it's cover. Of course I tipped 20% b/c I know what people in the service industry make, especially in a dying economy. I know a % of his sales go to other hard workers such as kitchen and hosts. I was actually planning on dinner there too, but not after that. I will enjoy The Keg again, in bigger cities where people care about their jobs, have more experience in customer service and probably get...
Read moreService was excellent. Our server (Lotus) went above and beyond and more than earned her 20% tip. The food was delicious. I was a bit disappointed the baked brie was gone from the starter menu. But the gruyere mushroom dip, baked garlic shrimp, mushrooms Neptune, calamari more than made up for it. They were all delicious and creamy.
I was a bit surprised by my pistachio salmon being half the size it normally was but it was lovely, juicy, and nutty. The side of broccolini was cooked perfectly crispy but not too crispy. The mac and cheese was very rich and cheesy. Not made with cheddar or mozzarella as I was expecting. My hubby had the prime rib medium rare (more to the rare side). He said it was a lovely thick cut of meat and was cooked to perfection. It tasted great according to him when eaten with the horseradish (he's not a fan of jus with his prime rib). His twice baked potato was also delicious. My mom-in-law got the 7 oz filet oscar-ed without the bacon wrap and she loved it. Apparently, she would have preferred hers with a bit more asparagus instead of green beans. But she didn't really care about the veggies and was more focused on her steak.
My 18m old daughter got the kids platter which she wasn't a huge fan of considering most of the veggies were raw (which we weren't charged for). But did love the fresh bread and herbed butter without crust, the burst berry smoothie, and 2 bites of my mac and cheese.
Overall the food was wonderful and delicious. Perfectly seasoned. The service was wonderful. The hostess was great at placing us at reading my special request (I asked for a half booth and half chair seating) and they gave us a booster seat instead of high chair (my kid us not a fan). It was a delightful...
Read moreI’ve always enjoyed The keg restaurants for their steaks and although I’ve eaten at several locations, I hadn’t been to the Fort McMurray location since before Covid. I ordered a garden salad and a medium well sirloin. Can’t go wrong on a salad 🥗, especially with the dressing on the side but I was wrong. The salad was so cold that I had to wait 5-7 minutes to get the chill off of it . I’m sure it didn’t come out of the freezer but the cooler must have been at a very low temperature.
I was looking forward to the steak but it was very well done (no small trace or hint of pink here) and the side veggies and garlic mash were lukewarm at best. They were either not warmed up enough or had been sitting on a counter shelf until the steak was cooked or the server picked up the order.
It was Valentines day and the last hour before closing but when you're paying a high price for a steak dinner , you expect more. I was dissapointed in the meal.
Several days later, i ate at another restaurant, an although not a steakhouse, the steak i ordered was way better than my experience at the Keg … and at a much...
