A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Golden – Papa Bear Café
Golden gets pretty lively in the summer, with no shortage of cafes lining the streets—some well-established, others charming little spots tucked away. It can honestly be hard to choose. What drew me to Papa Bear Café was their emphasis on homemade food, and I’m so glad we gave it a try.
We arrived before the lunch rush, but the place was already bustling with both small groups and larger tour parties. Knowing the kitchen looked more home-style than industrial, we made sure to place our order quickly—just in case we’d have to wait. Turns out, the food came out surprisingly fast.
And wow, was it worth it.
The soup of the day was a Ginger Carrot soup—absolutely delicious. The Caesar salad was incredibly fresh, and we added chicken, which came shredded and beautifully seasoned with their house-made dressing. One bite, and we were nearly in tears—it was that good.
Since we had a long drive ahead to Calgary, we also ordered the Salmon Eggs Benedict and their signature Bison Bun. The staff clearly take pride in their handmade buns, and it shows—perfect texture, flavorful, and a fantastic complement to the fillings.
Although the café officially closes at 3 p.m., they had already flipped the “Closed” sign early because they were overwhelmed with guests. Honestly, it’s no surprise—they were doing their best to keep up, and still delivered a warm, satisfying experience.
Papa Bear Café turned out to be more than just a meal stop—it made our road trip that much more memorable. Highly recommend if you’re passing...

Read morePapa Bear’s Kitchen was an impromptu visit and it did not disappoint. The food items were super fresh, with good quality ingredients and not stingy on portion sizes. The homemade soup and the Caesar salad were to die for.
We dined as 3 (2 adults, 1 toddler) the children’s menu was great. We had each ordered the chicken club sandwich (my partner had the potato soup; and I, the salad) it was real chicken breast and the freshest bread and ingredients. We literally crave this since eating here.
I gave the service as 1 only because the restaurant was empty and the server took forever to make our drinks which didn’t come until it was time to pay our bill which meant she put our cappuccino’s to go. There ended up being 4 tables in total and the kitchen staff (cooks) were coming out to run food presumably that was left on pass bar and not picked up and assisting the sever. She seemed extremely overwhelmed and very scatterbrained. Aside from the slow service the food quality, taste and portion sizes made up for this and her personality and empathy did show as she seemed to be a very kind and sweet human being. Perhaps it was an “off day” for her, we are all human after all. We definitely will be returning as we would like to try other menu items and are so happy to have found this...
