The Golden Star, indeed, has been one of Grande Prairie's go to restaurants for many years. Countless families, here in the peace country and further abroad, have made this restaurant part of their holiday, birthday, anniversary, etc. traditions. Ken, the owner, would always come around, greet his friends, meet new people, socialize a little, if he had a few seconds, then continue flying around the restaurant doing the job of what seemed like 16 employees simultaneously.
I must admit that there are two buts. Our extended families have also made the Golden Star a favorite but the last couple of times I went, the recipes used were just not exactly like I favor. The dishes themselves and especially the sauces were just not as tasty. This is coming from someone who can't stomach MSG so, for as long as I can remember, I've asked for my food to be prepared without the ever-popular Asian additive. Ken would always make sure that that was the case and, in addition, he would always make sure the food came piping hot.
Now, in terms of the cooking, some of his chefs, especially the ones with those tradition-bound secret recipes, have come and gone. The second but has to do with decor. The whole restaurant needs a face lift. I fully realize this is incredibly expensive endeavor but and be it as it may, if you, as a entrepreneur, wish to keep attracting an ever-expanding market of sit down customers, you must keep the decor light and modern. I'm not advocating here for modern garish style! Indeed all I'm saying is a face-lift.
So, in summary, personally, I would suggest a renovation and then hope very much that Ken is able to turn to one of those fantastic chefs, hire him or her, and get back to having the best Chinese food and restaurant...
Read moreFound this Grande Prairie hidden gem a couple winters ago when the street was closed but they were still open. It became our group of buddies' secret hidden paradise.
Dined in a few times, taken out a few times, ordered delivery too many times to count. We order enough for our crew of 6 big burly guys for just over $100 and always have plenty of leftovers for the next night. We've ordered from almost every Chinese food restaurant from Edmonton to Fort Nelson BC, this is still the best Chinese food I've had in Western Alberta to Northern BC. That's saying a LOT because I grew up in Vancouver with some of Canada's finest Asian cuisine. Golden Star feels like home!
Recommendation: Beef Chow Foon, little different if you've never had it before but it's the BEST noodle dish.
You won't be disappointed with Golden Star if you have an open mind (I know everyone has their favorite Chinese food spot and gets used to dishes done a certain way). This is officially the only Chinese food restaurant I'll...
Read moreGoogled "Buffet restaurants in Grande Prairie, AB" and this restaurant was one of the top listings. It IS NOT a buffet restaurant! (Not the restaurant's fault) Granted, I arrived late (9:00pm), but when I ordered the coffee, it was so old that no amount of milk would lighten it and it had that distinct "old coffee" taste. And $3.75 a cup? After looking through the menu, I was baffled by the pricing of the selections. $17.95 for chicken fried rice? $11.75 for salad rolls? $13.75 for won ton soup? I ordered the hot & sour soup ($9.50) and three spring rolls ($4.75). What a disappointment. The "hot & sour" soup was "hot & sweet"; almost syrupy sweet and clear. The spring rolls were tasty enough but each of the three of them were no bigger than my ring finger. On the upside, the woman who greeted me (owner?) was very pleasant & friendly and the waiter was very good. Restaurant is very nice inside but, given their pricing and the quality of the food, I doubt that I...
