TL;DR - Burger was a mess, bun was nearly liquid, milkshakes were runny and flavourless, fries were alright. Not coming back, sad to see my favourite burger place tank this bad.
I used to love Five Guys. I remember dying to find any reason to head down to south end just to get a delicious burger. So, finding myself in Guelph on the odd chance today, my wife and I stopped in and got burgers, fries, and shakes.
We go there early--just after opening, at about 11:40, stopping in for an early lunch. The restaurant was empty other than us, so the following comments on quality can hardly be blamed on a busy kitchen or high customer demands.
We ordered two bacon cheeseburgers, a regular fry to share, and a chocolate and strawberry milkshake.
The fries were great (which is about the only thing that bumped this review up to a 2-Star). Nice crunch, salted perfectly--no complaints.
The shakes were lackluster, the chocolate having barely any flavour at all (a big change since last time we were here and had the option of malted chocolate), and the strawberry was so filled with strawberry bits that it was more like bubble tea than a milkshake.
Our $12 burgers? Not so good.
We got takeout, so there's some small consideration to be made for this (though, food should really be able to last a 10-minute car ride in the age of Food Ordering services like Skip and Uber). I drove home while my wife dove into her burger. The bun was soaking wet to the point that it literally poured--not dripped--out of the foil wrapper and onto our car seat. The cheese was more liquid than solid, making the entire thing a sloppy mess which my wife could only get about 3 bites into before wrapping it back up and dumping it into the bag with disgust. When we got home, I opened up my burger and, as seen in the picture, found it soaking wet as well, to the point that the bun literally had the texture of hot wax. I literally had to pull a burger bun from my freezer and throw it into the toaster to try and reclaim any of the $50 spent on the lunch. It didn't work--the toppings were saturated to the point of being slop, the patty crumbled when I tried to transfer it, and the bacon was embedded into the bun mush that I couldn't separate it.
On a more positive note--the bites that I did end up getting, once all the edible food was transferred onto a structurally-sound bun, we're actually decent, showing that the Five Guys recipe for making burger patties still holds up, even if everything else falls apart.
I think this is more an experience in "Just because you CAN buy a franchise, doesn't mean you SHOULD", as I speculate that, since I was last at the Guelph Five Guys, ownership has changed hands, resulting in a drop in...
Read moreService very slow & not terribly happy to see us...lol No smiling at cash or while they worked. All prepared up front while you can see everything. I give them one star for many reasons. Yes, the burgers were handmade and fresh ground beef. A positive in my books but they slid downhill from there. It wasn't when we were ordering but on the wall in seating area that I noticed a regular sized sign saying "we cook our hand cut fries in 100% peanut oil". I began my terror of even staying, let alone eating anything! I have anaphylactic reaction to all things PEANUT. What was to add insult to my growing agitation, was after warning them and making certain the burgers were cooked and prepared in one area and fries in another, by different people, they proceeded to pack the fries on top of the burgers in one bag. To my husbands horror the outside of the bag was covered in oily deposits of greasey fingerprints. The bag wasn't fit to carry by either of us at that point. It was a greasey mess! All this culinary macabre experience for the price tag of $38 Dollars & change. This meal included 2 bacon cheeseburgers made with fresh ground beef Processed cheese slices Lettuce, tomatoes, onion & pickle 1 large French fries 1 strawberry milkshake The burgers alone were over $11. Each, the fries $5. & the milkshake nearly $7.00 . So needless to say this was a one time visit, lesson learned and will not be recommending this establishment to anyone! Good day Five Guys 👦 😌...
Read moreA new place to check out, in a part of town I haven't been to since +/-2016. It was clean, smelt yummy, had a number of people who had placed orders, posters of critic reviews up on the walls. Menu was simple, the staff polite and you could see what they were doing. Everything looked clean. I picked a bacon cheese burger with veggies, and a PB milkshake, which was about $20 plus tax, my better-half got the same burger with pop and French fries. It was listed where the french fry potatoes came from, PEI. While we waited, I checked out the unisex bathroom, could have been cleaner and the tp roll came off the holder, but it did the job. After our number was called, my better-half when picking it up asked about the peanuts on the counter, and was told that people could get a complimentary serving of them while they waited, a great healthy snack, in my opinion. The shake was cold and tasty on a hot day of hiking. The french fry portion was twice as much as I thought we would get for a regular, and tasted great- except for A LOT of salt. We rubbed out as much as possible, and then it was still alot. The burger looked great and the size was filling. It had a new taste I wasn't sure about though, but I ate it all. I would have liked a little more lettuce. The taste of the hot peppers and sauce was missing. Overall it was ok and a day later I am not sick, so that...
