Ok, I'm going to give a my honest experience here. My wife and I wanted to try something new and she was feeling Mexican. So we did a Google search and this place popped up, a new to us, hole in the wall restaurant, that appears to be run by a Mexican family. We're thinking we hit the jackpot. Were greeted by two very nice young ladies and they tell us to take a seat wherever we want. Most to the tables were large and we didn't want to take those so we chose the only three seater in the place that turned out to be close to the speakers. That was a bad choice for us, we could barely hear each other talk. We perused the menu and made our decisions. I was starving so I look for something that looked like it's going to be a decent portion and enchiladas tick that box ($17.50) and they come with beans and rice. My wife goes for three tacos ($5 each).
Now I'll start off with my wife's opinion. She said her tacos were flavorful and a decent size for her. They looked fine and now I wish I had ordered them instead.
As for me, I'm not sure if the waitress could see the disappointment in my face when she dropped my plate. I'm expecting decent sized, oven baked enchiladas, especially for $17.50. What do I see? Three 6" fresh wraps (not baked), the size they use for their tacos, wrapped less than an inch in diameter with two cups the size that most places use for a small serving of ketchup, just a bit more than a tablespoon would be my guess. The enchiladas were drizzled in salsa verde not an enchilada sauce), crema and raw onions. Needless to say, I ate my supper and was still fairly hungry afterwards.
The flavour wasn't really stupendous either. The chicken that was stuffing the enchiladas was kinda meh, the toppings were meh also. I was hoping for some heat, some snap but everything was just bland-ish. Now maybe I'm just not familiar enough with real Mexican food, but this doesn't live up to the stories.
I'd like to say I'll be back but I'm truely not sure what all of the great ratings are talking about. I might try this place again, but I think I'd rather stick with Taqueria Este...
Read moreA happy find! Tried here on a recent Saturday evening in July on a whim, and glad I did. A friend and I were driving in the neighborhood and stopped in around 6:30/7? There was one other customer inside, and a table full outside. Two picnic tables outside and seating for maybe 15 inside? So it's pretty small, but even on our 2nd visit for lunch on a weekday, it still wasn't busy. Cute atmosphere with the menu on a chalkboard, lots of natural light, partial view into the kitchen. Very friendly owners & staff. The most important part: the food, which is a very small menu but satisfying. We tried the tinga (chicken), the chorizo, cochinita, fish, pastor and tofu tinga. My personal least favorite was the tofu tinga, but we both loved all the others which were full of juicy flavor. They are small on a corn tortilla, but just perfect to get 3 or 4 as a meal and then be full. The guac & chips were very good too, with offer of chip top-up. Finish your meal with a tasty Jarrito pop. Next visit I will try the quesadillas with rice & beans, but see my main go-to being the fish &...
Read moreMy family and I are big fans of this spot! Hadn't been in a while, and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few new menu items!! I ordered a chicken tamal (new) and a couple of suadero tacos. My wife got her standby burrito and our son got the nachitos off their new kids menu. Everything was delicious as usual, but I was particularly taken with the tamal. I hesitate to say anything besides the tacos is my favourite item, but the tamal just may be the one that does it. The little guy found the chorizo on the nachitos a little spicy, but that just meant I got to eat a pile of chorizo 🤷♂️ he liked everything else about them, and i have to say i would gladly order them as an appetizer. We also split an order of quesadillas. They've added a Soups section that includes birria, pozole and pancita, all of which I am very keen to try. So excited for our next visit. Didn't have time this evening to try the tres leches. Fingers crossed for the...
