When they first converted from Fong's (Chinese food) to Kyoto Sushi they were a welcome addition to the town. The service and food were quite good for an all-you-can eat sushi restaurant. Since then the service has declined. To avoid giving you more food, they constantly ask "are you finished" after your first round (no matter how small) and if you place a second order they either conveniently lose it and send other servers by to see if you're finished or they take a long time to fill it in the hopes that you'll just leave. Don't even think about leaving a few extra pieces...they will charge you extra...but not when they present you with the bill...they will chase you down for more money. I can understand if people over-order and leave piles of food behind, but for 4 or 5 pieces of left over, I think they can let it go. We've also used them for take out. Again, in the beginning they were great, and the prices for things like Bento were very good. However, over time, that got worse too...when you come in to pick up your order they will barely acknowledge you and make you wait...meanwhile your food is sitting there getting cold. We used to go there a fair amount, but with the cold take out and the extra charges on our last dine in, I told them that we would not be returning. THEY...
ย ย ย Read moreKyotos is an all you care to eat japanese restaurant. You place your order via an iPad. Yes, there are pictures if you are unfamiliar with some of the dishes. Having lived in Japan, these are not authentic Japanese dishes but for the most part they are tasty and filling. Sashimi is only available on the dinner menu. Rolls are good with a fair amount of choice. Stir-fries tend to all taste the same. The cost is approximately $15 (lunch) and $25 (dinner) and it includes green tea and dessert if you want them. The quality of the food is good for the price. The staff is unfriendly and not helpful so go in knowing the service is not good. Even when there is only 2 tables occupied the staff stands around on their phones. It is a busy place on Saturday nights from 6pm onwards.
Update 2022. Prices are up now at $36 for dinner on the weekend but the service is MUCH much much better than it used to be. The food is good. Not excellent but tasty and filling. It has become very casual, sweats and ball caps kind of casual so it does not work for a special date night but rather a casual friday night sushi with friends. Definitely a better experience than in the past few years. Being closed for covid has clearly given them time to fix their...
ย ย ย Read moreKyoto Sushi's charm comes from the variety and ease of ordering. Enter, sit down, have a bit of everything, and leave satisfied. It's not as gourmet and flavorful as the pricier Yo-Yo Sushi further down Guelph Street, but if you have the time to spare, it handily outperforms the mall's Bibab Express in variety, flavour, quantity, and value - while being a five minute walk away! Expect a $35 price per head for Lunch, which goes up to $45 for the less filler-heavy Dinner menu after 3:30.
i haven't experienced any problems on my many visits, so to me the service is that charming minimalism that only a place like this can pull off: once seated, you receive a tablet on which to enter your orders, and a few minutes later your food arrives. The exchange, while a little impersonal, allows you to focus on what you came in for: the food.
The atmosphere is modern and sleek. The walls have a tasteful quantity of japanese styled paintings and artworks - without trying too hard to be authentic either. The seats are surprisingly comfortable.
My personal recommendation: the grilled eggplant. I don't know if you're supposed to eat the skin or not but I love it...
