I've read and heard many positive reviews about Motel for some time and I was determined to experience for myself and took advantage of a day off to visit after reserving a table online and I was not disappointed. There was no need to reserve a table online but because of the distance I was driving I felt it essential after hearing about line ups, but this may be on weekends only. We were greeted and given the option to dine indoors or on their patio. The noise level seemed quite loud and the room small to me and we opted to check out the patio. There are about 5 tables tucked neatly between buildings, one seating 4 and others for 2. Our waiter arrived right away and set down a carafe of ice water and filled two glasses. I settled for a chai latte as they don't offer a Matcha Latte, my wife ordered a caffe latte and then ordered 'The Bellman' (2 eggs, grapefruit, bacon, greens, challah toast) and 'The Travel Guide.' (3 egg omelette with roast tomatoes, gruyere cheese, tater tots, sour dough). All excellent. My 3 egg omelette seemed small but was very filling and the tater tots were so good, I hope they make their own. I switched the challah with sour dough because I find sour dough too greasy. My wife also ordered a 'Naughty Chambermaid,' St-Germain, Prosecco or similar sparkling wine. I expected to see Edward Scissorhands clearing tables. Shaun Holler--? provided wall art on the patio and created the illusion of a pool from a basement entry and you can see the pool depths delineated on the wall, all in tones of turquoise, pink, gold and white. Live plants would be a recommendation to the patio rather than plastic. The interior continues the 1950's vibe with neon, rattan, and the same colour scheme. They should try to locate a vintage cigarette vending machine. The flooring I thought was turquoise tile but from signs of wear it appears to be painted, too bad. $92.00 all in. Motel's location is interesting in an area with signs of gentrification between Victoria Avenue & Wentworth Street and metered parking is on street or in a municipal lot nearby. Many street art painted building exteriors surrounding and some nice shops and services about. Open M-F 10-3, weekends 9:30-3. Online, take-out, reservations accepted. Highly recommend Motel and definitely...
Read moreWent for brunch with a girlfriend this past Sunday. It was a second visit and will be the last. The place was busy as expected, but that seems to do a lot of heavy lifting for poor overall customer service. Our waiter forgot about us multiple times. Drinks took forever to arrive, coffee refills were offered but never materialized. When we finally got our order in, I asked for the eggs benny with my eggs poached hard. I can't eat runny yolk because frankly, it's disgusting. The waiter told me it was no problem. When my order arrived, there was a jiggly mess of soft poached eggs on top of my plate. The waiter acknowledged that it wasn't what I asked for and that he had told me it wouldn't be a problem but then just kind of shrugged his shoulders about it and said he could bring a side plate so I could take the eggs off my plate if I wasn't going to eat them. Listen, I could understand if I asked for them cooked a completely different way, but the difference between soft poached and hard poached is a matter of two minutes in the boiling water, it's not like I was asking for them to be spun into golden tipped meringues. I was charged 21 dollars for half a waffle and 2 slices of bacon, offered no solution to a breakfast that I couldn't even eat and no one in that place gave a good god damn about it. Slow, pitiful service. Inedible food. No F's given to correct it. If I wanted to go somewhere to feel like I didn't matter at all, I would have stopped at my ex's house for free. So if you're into that, this is the spot for you. But if you want great brunch & exceptional service,...
Read moreI came across the Motel Restaurant on Tik Tok and so I decided to treat myself to a birthday brunch there a few weeks ago
Starting off with the positives, the food was good. I tried the champagne pancakes which were yummy. I also tried the one night in Brussels dish. It was a tad too salty for my liking, but still enjoyable. My husband had the blueberry french toast. He said it was fine, but it wasn't spectacular. Overall the food was a solid 8/10.
The service was where it went downhill for me. It felt very cold and unwelcoming. When I entered the restaurant a server at the counter glanced at us and then went back to his conversation. It wasn't until another couple minutes later that another server greeted us. While we were seated, it was nearly impossible to get their attention, almost as if they were intentionally avoiding eye contact. Our only opportunity to speak with the server was when he came to us to either to take our order or serve our drinks/food. On two occasions, my husband would start speaking and they would leave before he could get a word in. The service was also very slow. I understand that the servers have a lot to juggle, but for me a simple "hey I'll be with you in a moment" or "sorry for the wait" would have went a long way. I left the restaurant feeling that I was somehow inconveniencing them by dining there.
Overall the food was great but not good enough to overcome the lack of service. Would not recommend based on...
