Erie Belle Restaurant is named after the 1883 explosive ship wreck nearby. The restaurant is almost 40 years old and certainly feels like it from the old worn wooden chairs and tables to the weather beaten patio area. We visited the restaurant on Thursday August 28 around 12:30 pm. The place wasn't very full as it opens at 12 noon. As the establishment is famous for fish & chips, we had to order it. There are 4 ingredients to choose from: cod, haddock, perch and shrimp. Since perch is a local fresh water fish, we ordered three pieces. We also ordered the lobster rolls as an appetizer. I tried lobster rolls in East coast (Maine style) so I had high expectations. Here's my honest opinion of the cold lobster rolls: the meat pieces were uniformly small and didn't taste like lobster. The dressing is mayonnaise but I couldn't taste any diced celery. The buns were very small. It was mediocre at best. And the fried perch fish pieces had some small pinbones and had some fishy after taste. It tasted slightly better after adding some tartar sauce and lemon juice. The fish and chips were not particularly amazing. The men's washroom had dark Grey tiles and darker colour floors. It looked like I went inside a black hole. There was no toilet paper in the stall and paper towel in the wash basin. Honestly, that is basic hygiene to supply toilet paper & towel. It is extremely disappointing to see that no one even looks after the washroom on a daily basis. We had a very mediocre experience at Erie Belle. The place can use some TLC from furniture to washroom. There is lot of areas for improvement.

Update Sep 2024: we enjoyed dinner on the front patio overlooking the harbour this evening. Reason for my update is to compliment Erie Belle not only for great fish & chips, and service, but also for their consideration in having a separate and distinct ' non gluten ' fryer, which meant my wife could enjoy GF battered fish & chips along with me. All french fries are prepared in the gluten free oil which renders them safe for those with caeliac allergies. Shout out & Well done to the owners and chefs!! U I have been enjoying Erie Belle fish & chips for more than 40 years, although I expect owners/management have changed during that time. During a brief period a few years ago, food quality suffered a bit, however they are back to 5/5 star once again, as we enjoyed all meal items in this occasion. Fish chowder appetizer out in moments along w Cowbell & Grey Matter draft beer. Haddock w fries and creamy cole slaw, perch & onion rings w vinegar based slaw, all fresh & delicious. Reason for 4 is simply the extensive delay between soup & arrival of mains, & same delay w receiving our bill to settle up. This should not be held against staff as they were doing their best (lack of staff the norm post COVID), on a very busy summer evening, w dining room & patio full. It should also be noted the 2 of us were seated immediately, although we had not made reservations. Thank you for many years of great quality F&C's.

Atmosphere - excellent old English seaside fishery theme. Restaurant is clean and tidy (unlike under old owners). Service - polite and courteous service but under staffed and long delay in getting service and waiting for bill to pay. Food - I'm not sure what happened but ended up with massive order of side fries and small piece of fish for $21. Fish was nice and crispy battered but not allowed to drain/soak up oil in paper towels so extremely greasy. Coleslaw was obviously bagged refrigerated as it came with plastic bag piece. After decade long hiatus due to filthy dining area (under old owners) we had decided to try again since it has been under new ownership for a few years now. Dining area is clean and tidy however; hiatus to resume.

The four of us ate inside. I wish we cancelled our order immediately after it was placed because it only got worse. Should have left a tip for the server and left (Server was so kind).

Cons Flies everywhere! Often a few crawling on you at once and buzzing in your face The dessert/drink menu was so old that the metal corners were rusted and black mold was visibly growing behind the plastic on the paper The vinegar jar was completely covered in hardened tartar sauce Large, grey, rotten, rubbery mystery chunk about the size of a nickel found in the coleslaw (looked like rotten fish skin). This was far beyond what you would find in a bag of mixed greens. Was told after "it was fine and just a piece of onion". Either way not sure why that would end up there or why one would chop up a rotten onion? One chair had to be wiped off because it was filthy All drink glasses has a strange gritty, poorly rinsed film stuck on the outside Surprisingly the female washroom looked clean but smelled like sewage Men's washroom sink was "out of order" and instead a jar of hand sanitizer was placed in the sink as a subtle indication. No sign or warning of this or an invitation to use another sink if needed.

The food was ok. Fish was a little soggy but still edible. Kids meal ($7.99) was a very small portion. Three tiny chicken nuggets and a small portion of fries (drink and dessert also included which we skipped). Dishes are old in appearance but this being a concern is subjective.

Gagged down the food, the accumulation of the above made for a very unappetizing experience. Over $50 later we left with much regret and frustration. The kindness of the server was the only thing that kept us...

Because I'm not a liberal supporter, tonight was the worst experience EVER! I was seated at a dirty table, but I said I would wait. While waiting 5 customers came in after me, sat at the bar, and they were served their alcohol before my table was cleaned, and before my order was taken. The owner was silently extremely ignorant while serving others, continually walked past my table without a glance and completely avoided eye contact while passing directly in front of me at least 5 times serving other customers. After about 40 minutes, Imy order was finally taken, but my table still had not been cleaned. Finally my meal was about to be served when i asked the waiter if he would eat off a dirty table, he replied " certainly not " and cleaned the table. I presume the owner was expecting me to leave, and that's wht my table wasn't cleaned off. I've been coming here for 5 years, leaving at the very least a $5.00 tip, though lately has been $10.00 tip due to liberal taxes. Although service was great, up until now, this was the absolute worst experience here ever. I'm seriously debating whether to come back here again. If you are a conservative, you may want to reconsider because we should be censored.

Well, 9th of October 2025, I decided to come back. I asked for the usual table at the bar, and after receiving the menu, one of the best waitresses came to me and I just found out that I have been barred from this establishment because of my review. Enjoy your meal, but be sure to keep your options to yourself as you will be hated upon in the typical liberal voters fashion.

Good luck and best wishes to all the staff, especially the kindest of them...
