2 stars because what we got had good flavours. We ordered via Uber eats and the way they have it set up, they don't explicitly say rice doesn't come with the meals. For $15 a plate it can be a toss up. Well through Uber eats they have a side of rice available for an additional $3.50 which is fine if they had mentioned somewhere in the description rice didn't come with the entrees. It didn't. Then if you look for rice it's under "Rice specialties" it is news to me that plain rice was a specialty at an Indian food restaurants so we didn't think to it would be there. We scoured the menu but obviously missed it, so this assumed it would be included. This would up the pretax total for the each dish to $18.50 which is on the pricey side in this town but worth it if the food is good. Now I had the Jalfrezi and more than half the volume was onions. We have previously ordered this and there weren't nearly as many onions. My husband has the tiki masala, he enjoyed the flavour very much. Though when we couldn't find any rice to add we did in the notes make a request for basmati rice, since we thought it was included and wanted that versus jasmine rice. They included a half a little container of rice with a handwritten note that said "This is w/the rice we can give for free. Please order next time under "Rice specialties, basmati rice"". It was a bit insulting because we didn't want rice for free. It wasn't very clear that it wasn't included it in the first place and had it been easy to find we would have gladly paid for our containers. They didn't attempt to contact us to let us know the error, or see if it was made in error. Just a condescending message about free rice and a laughable amount of included "free" rice (maybe 3.5 oz worth cooked) so $37 got us our food delivered and each an entree with no rice. One dish being more onions than anything else. We really have enjoyed eating here over the years but there are many places within the city that understands how to list their menu clearly especially during COVID times and doesn't try to insult those who aren't able to decipher their unclear ordering menu. As someone who has worked in the inustry changing the wording under these dishes to say they do not include rice and where to find the rice side orders...
Read moreSurprisingly, this place has a high rating but I still don't know WHY!!!. The food was TERRIBLE! (throwing up) and the customer service was even worse. The owner, Vijay has no respect for his customer. We ordered the following items and this is what we had to say about it..The daal looked like it was just boiled with no spices, the saag paneer looked like the canned saag boiled with hard paneer cubes, the chicken briyani had no flavour and very disgusting (rice overcooked). The naan looked like bread and somosa were drenched in oil.
Normally, I don't write reviews but this was worth it so it can save someone else from going to Vijay's. The owner is disrespectful and did not even want to speak to us when we complained about his food. We complained to the server about the food being very bad. We told her we won't eat anything and she took all the food away. She told Vijay about the food and he walked away to the cashier and she came to hand us the bill. She said we would have to pay. We told her its not about the bill because we are ready to pay but we would like to speak to the owner and she said he doesn't want to speak to us. This made us even more mad because we wasted our time and the food was terrible which we didn't even eat. She went to him and told him we need to talk to him and he came looking angry and started being very disrespectful telling us we shouldn't have complained about his food. He was being defensive! HA!HA! He mentioned he had 31 years of experience ...Ha!HA! which was a joke!..if you really had 31 years of experience then you wouldn't be serving disgusting food and be rude to your customers. This was the worst food we have ever had!!!!! He was a joke!
My advice to everyone who wants to try good Indian food is to go to Masala Bay - Waterloo. They do know how to treat you well and serve you the finest Indian food. Maybe Vijay should go there to learn how to cook and learn some respect!
WORST PLACE EVER! WILL NEVER GO BACK! For the first time we felt like we wasted our money and time. Disgrace to Indian good Vijay's Resturant! Pathetic!!!
Vijay's restaurant does not even deserve half a star rating but had to give one star because it won;t let me...
Read moreDecided to try this place based on the reviews. Not a pleasant experience at all. Indian food is supposed to burst with flavour and aroma. I found this place to be a watered down version of what Indian food is supposed to be. We walked into the place, the owner comes up dressed in street casual clothes and said "yes?". We had no reservation. He had the host spread cloth on an unprepared table (several other tables looked free). We were grateful nevertheless. Ordered the Fish Masala, Naan, Veg Biryani, Seafood Jalfrezi and beer. During this time, I noticed other guests came in and the owner greeted them with normal, expected pleasantries, instead of the "yes?" we got from him. While waiting for the food and enjoying the beer, I asked the waitress if we could be moved as it was quite drafty where we were and our feet were cold. I was told all the other tables are reserved. I decided that was fair and proceeded to enjoy the beer. Not too long afterwards a Caucasian gentleman (party of two) walked in with no reservation (I could clearly hear). The owner immediately walked them over to a table that was suddenly not reserved. The food finally came and by then we were starved. The first bite was disappointing on all counts. The seafood jalfrezi had no aroma, in a watered down gravy and packed with onions as a filler. The 'naan' seemed like something you would get from the Super Store and shove in the oven when you are in a hurry. The Biryani had zero aroma and extremely bland. Taste was rather awful. Spat it out after one spoonful. The fish masala was palatable. The meal came with basmati rice. The two best things on our table were the beer and the basmati rice. The owner saw that we piled the naan on top of the biryani and left it there. He came over to ask how is the food. I told him it was horrible. He seemed to think it was a joke at first. He then proceeded to tell me that he's been in business for 34 yrs and served millions of customers. Fair but this means he's been serving substandard food for 34 years. If you are looking for a better taste of Indian cuisine, try Bombay Bhel. I've had better food there. Even Borealis has a waaay better veg curry and they are NOT an...
