We found this restaurant completely by chance after whale watching, and everything we tried was unbelievably delicious. The onion soup, cheese fondue (which comes with homemade bacon!), grilled salmon, hamburger, and mac & cheese — which also comes with homemade bacon — were all simply amazing. We also had the half rack of ribs. But I must say, the onion soup was the best I’ve ever had! The service was very fast, and the staff were friendly and extremely helpful. One of the hosts recommended we sit on the upstairs terrace, and we enjoyed our meal with a beautiful lake view.

Major ripoff on the steaks. Do not go! $500 for two adults and 2 teenagers. Steaks were grey. Yes, the owner thinks it’s funny I said grey - so let me expand. What “Grey” Implies in Steak Terms • Flavor: Missing the rich umami taste that comes from the Maillard reaction (searing). Hope that is clear to the owner who thinks it’s funny to charge almost $100 for a “grey” steak I included two photos to show the difference between a grey steak and one that I cooked properly seared. But I have to say the Mac and cheese with bacon was great!

We ordered salmon tartar and fish and chips, both were delicious as much as the waitress was not acceptable!! I just said I don't want fries and only salad with tartar would be enough. She said you can replace it with sweet potato fries. We both did and they charged us 2$ more each for that. On the other hand, in the beginning, when I asked for clean glasses, she argued with me that the glasses are wet because they were in dishwasher.... If you're charging expensive as a high level restaurant, don't serve your client like that!!!

Food was ok to be honest. But would have given zero star for Service! Steak was good - not awesome but given here at La Malbaie, there aren’t many choices and most steaks are made by pubs/bars, this is a real steakhouse. However, I really disliked how the waitress behaved when we paid our bill. She made a mistake on our bill by overcharging $16. And she might have thought that we would have “underpay” her for tips for that mistake - so when I was getting the machine to put in tips she took it and put in the tips by herself and said “this would be the same”. It wasn’t an exaggerated amount and I was fine with it but just the way she did it was surely NOT KIND! And if I interpreted it beyond it I could have said it’s discrimination as I’m an Asian and she thought I don’t pay fair tips???!! She surely made an obvious mistake on the bill to begin with. Anyway it’s fine but given we are staying for a whole week and was planning to go back right away tomorrow as my daughter likes the rib-eye! But in this case, surely I WON’T - rather just have our food at the Fairmont where we stay and had above and beyond...

First of all, there was a mix up with our reservation - it somehow didn't end up being recorded so our seats were taken when we got there, but they were genuinely apologetic and made room for us in the back as soon as they could. We also got free cocktails for our trouble, which were delicious.

In terms of decor/furniture: the seats are kind of rickety and uncomfortable, though, both upstairs in front of the stage and downstairs, especially if you're a plus size person. The decor is very rustic, kitschy, and cluttered.

In terms of the food, one of our group got the "panier party", which she thought was ok except for the "munchers", which she thought were gross. I got the mac and cheese with the vegetarian protein option. I thought the mac and cheese was tasteless and I was not a fan of the protein (but that might just be a manner of preference). The other person got the burger and she enjoyed it a lot. It makes sense that the beef option was the best of the orders considering it is a steakhouse.

The live music upstairs was entertaining and the performer was...

Don't take the brisket if you are a brisket fan. The only thing right about it is the right part of the beef. Otherwise, it's dry and not smoked as they pretend it to be. Just 2 slices of overcooked flavorless beef. The waitress said it was cooked for 24 hours and smoked for one hour. Another guy who looked like the manager or owner said it was smoked for 24 hours. When I said I've been smoking brisket for years, they're aswer was "oh! We're talking to an expert here!?" Followed by, "it's funny, another customer took it and said it was delicious..." I don't expect to like everything I eat when I go to a restaurant, but don't I hate being shoved aside like I...
